Hi guys. We were assigned a project where we had to pick a book and do a project on it. At the time I was reading The Magician and The Cardsharp, and decided to do my project on that book. What I wanted to do was make a gambling demo video illustrating the life of Dai Vernon and the life of gambling by portraying it in nothing but a gambling demo. I am stuck at the decision of whether or not I should "expose" the cheats used by con artists just a little bit by basically showing that the card comes out of the center of the deck or from the bottom or whatever I actually use for this. Do you think this would be a wise Idea? It's kind of bold, especially for n 8th grader Just asking for some thoughts and maybe some suggestions

Exposing sleights is the most uninteresting thing you could ever show a laymen. They're interested right up until you show them the sleight........then they could care less, and your cred actually diminishes in their eyes as they start to think "he's not so good....I could do that".
Why don't you do something like the the Vernon Poker Deal, or something else that will actually entertain them. You simply tell them that you're doing seconds, greeks, bottoms, and centers..........they don't have a clue. Anything but exposing sleights. |

King, as always, knows what he is talking about. Play up the fact that this stuff is possible, and that you are doing it (in the trick).

So don't show them HOW it's done, but say that it is happening? Or just DO it and don't tell them anything and present it as a piece of magic. Maybe doing a story deck type effect by having the cards shuffled then hands of poker or blackjack reveal the story?

Remember, the actual concept of a center deal is alien to 99+% of the general population, so exposing it is pointless.
Even if you don't do a center deal, but explain to them that you are doing a center deal, you'll still have to explain what it is! The short answer to your question though is a definite "don't show them HOW it's done, but say that it's happening". In the context of your initial post, just doing a magic trick really won't have much to do with Karl Johnson's book. BUT, doing something interesting, and tying it all in with the center deal (whether you're actually doing one or not) will bring Karl's book, Vernon, the Center Deal, and Allen Kennedy all together in one nice package that will likely grab your audiences attention until you're done. |

Ok, I think I got this now lol. Do them, do my demo, do my story, write it out and everything, do the cheats, tell them what happens (the cards can come from the center, bottom, or top of the deck) but tie that into the patter. Maybe I can deal out my stack face up so it retains it all, then start rolling out the hands

Nick Trost has a couple of very effective "pseudo" center deals in his first book, "The Card Magic of Nick Trost".
There are others out there as well, you've probably already got a few in your library. |

I know a few. I don't have Nick's book though and I don't know if it will really be worth rushing to get and practicing just to put it in a school project where it can probab;y be replaced, you know?
