Well I have taken the plunge and ordered two of these:
cabelas I will put them side by side and put a bar at the top between the 2 to create a mini Spider backdrop. I will use the crushed "velvet" like material in black as the main backdrop stretched out and add some dark red trim at the top and sides to create my backdrop. I will let you know how this project works out and I will post some pictures for this project. I could not pass up on the price for this. I think I will use a carabiner to lock it in place to keep it open. Jamie Salinas

I received the frames yesterday. They are not as big as I would have liked to have but they do have potential. I will take some photos and post them here.

Great minds clearly think alike, Jamie! Barry Mitchell came up with this idea several years ago. You'll find it in his book, The Magic of Thinking Creatively and on his school show video Magic Mooves Me. His concept offers a way to get an extra 6"-10" in height and width out of the basic base design. I've used it for years and have even adapted it for outdoor use on all but the windiest days.

These backdrop panels are easy to make with materials common to most hometowns.

Hmmmmmm. An extra 6 to 10 inches of height and width. I will have to look into this. I already have devised a method to "lock" it in place. I will look into this on Monday.

I believe there was an entire thread (and a LONG one, too) dedicated to this very subject a couple years ago right here.

Watch on ebay for old trade show frameworks. I got an 8 foot by 10 foot for $100. You just have to watch. some of them have a slight curve to the footprint so they stand on their own.

Any backdrop that's is not atleast 10 feet tall is pointless and will look worse than if you didn't use a backdrop at all.
A backdrop is suppose to nicely frame you and your performance. If you are using an 6-8ft backdrop and the audience is sitting at a lower level than you, the background (from your chest up) will be out of the frame. |

Although this does not have the height that I would desire, these may be better suited for creating wings with a backdrop. I still think this is an inexpensive option that will work in many situations.

Or as a stage pöatform, because its a steel construction

I would never trust this framework as a stage platform. It's not at all strong enough for such a thing.

Although these are designed for a queen size air mattress to hold 2 adults, I would not use them as support for a plywood type platform. I will try to work on the photos this weekend but I am in the middle of reconstruction from damage from hurricane Ike.
Anyway, they do have potential especially as wings or for a small venue as backdrop. I am still leaning towards using a black material without anything fancy. Jamie

Jamie How did you get them to lock into place and how are your going to attach the curtains? Thanks Mark

The plan is to use nylon cord and a metal clip to lock the frame in place. This should be fine. I have not thought about how to secure the cloth but this will probably be simple black non-wrinkle looking light weight crushed velvet like material. This will simply be like brick wall in a bag but simple black solid wall.
These will be used for setting up my 3001 suspension and probably used as wings as I work a lot of hotels. I will probably look into being able to change the cloth for kid\family show use. Jamie

Sorry guys but this project has been placed on hold since I have been having repairs done to my house from hurricane damage from last year. It has taken that long with insurance and contractors, etc. I am back in the house but I am installing the flooring. I will get back on this project in the next few weeks.
