Hi !
There is a lot of magic shops in Asia who sell complete "mask changing act"... I would like to know if someone on the magic Café bought one set from one of the shops and what you think about ... regards allan |

I was trying not to answer this thread as I promised my mentor not to reveal anything about this type of act. Here's as much as I can reveal.
Actually there are many methods used for the mask changing act. It is not as simple as buying a set from one of those selling the act. The complexity lies in the mask (materials used), the release mechanism, the hook-up with the costume and the time to set up (and how many people needed to set up). There are pros and cons to those sets sold out there. Some work nicely and some don't. There are just too many versions sold now. In addition you also need to have a custom made costume. Without that you cannot do the act. One more important point is ... you must learn how to make those masks. If they don't teach you how to do that you will be in trouble. What if the mask is damaged or lost, what happens to your act? The different versions lies in the way the mask are made and also the hook up system. Good versions allows you to hook up the entire system in less than 20 minutes. The usual versions take much longer. Hope this helps. |

Not to hijack the thread or get into issues of originality, but how much can one really do with masks?
That question was not intended to disuade anyone else from taking up the act, but to find out if there is more to it than what we see with JM.

James, you opened my eyes a bit. Thank you!
That presentation was beuatiful all the way around. I think what was driving my line of thought was that prior to seeing this video, everything I had seen on masks felt like a bad copy of JM. Other than looking at this to see if it gave that same copy feel, I didn't find myself comapring her to JM while watching. Her sytle and presentation was unique. I really liked the quick changes she did by turning her head. Also, the style of the masks was different. I can see how changing the style of the mask also changes the feel of the routine. In my mind, JM's style is more dramatic and hers is a sublte expression of beauty. To the OP, sorry for getting your thread off track. Hopefully you'll get the answers you need

I don't know a whole lot about mask changing acts, but I do know that the Chinese Mask Changing acts are completely different from JM's Mask Act, both in technique and presentation.

James,
Are there any good books on the subject? I would be really interested in the meanings and symbolism of the masks. As much as I would like to also learn the "how's" I doubt I have the time to do the work needed. I remember watching a movie about a street performer (Mask changer) who ended up teaching a young girl how to perform even though that was taboo at one time. One more question, I understand that mask changing started in the Chinese Opera but I have see images (and the movie) where it was performed on the street. Is this true? If so I might be very interested in learning more about it. Good topic Allen31!! Peace |

Its unfortunate that there are no books for that at the moment. Perhaps when I drop by USA one day, I may start a mask changing workshop (with permission from my mentor of course).
As to the symbolism of the masks ... each mask is actually a real character in the history of China. The people (audience) in China gives better response to the mask changing act because they can differentiate the different characters of the masks during each change e.g they see a culprit change to a hero, etc. Historically the mask changing act is a closely guarded secret. Most of the mask changing acts seen today are knock-off of the real thing. The entire mechanism is different. The real thing includes the visual costume change too. If the mask change is impressive, then the visual costume change would surprise everyone. I am right now trying to change the entire mechanism to depict the modern world. That means the mask change can be done with modern costume. Its challenging and I am still working it out. |

Hey magicdrums
if you are refering to the table that jeff dumps off into and picks stuff out of they I can tell you. it is his road case. YUP that's all it is. I do the same thing my open top table is my road case. Jeff uses a fiber road case which keeps it light. now of course he has modified the interior to suit his needs for the act. so Have i. if you need any other info on it let me know sam

There once was a brief case that was sold that when placed on the floor you could pull it upward and it would become a table.

They were called Joker Tables I believe, back in the 1960's or 1970's. If you are refering to the one on Jeff McBride video, I do not believe that model was ever on the market. The table was sold in an unfinished state, Jeff probablly had the rest made for him. |
