I refer to his fabulous History Lesson. My questions are if the routine has been written down anywhere and if he's using combo cups?

If you mean has it been published, then I don't think so. And yes, he uses combo cups.

Ricky's material is Ricky's and I am sure he will likely not publish or release any of it.

Yeah, as I remember those cups are quite rare too. The routine itself is quite straight forward but it's better to create your own and make it your own, like Ricky did....

Ricky's routine is what made me fall in love with the C&B. someone on here (prob bill palmer) said ricky's cups were the only chopped PF cup from that time. they are prety unique I guess.
its a beautiful routine. I can still remember the 1st time I saw it, and it fried me. |

As far as I know, they are the only set of Paul Fox combo cups in existence.
Although several of the individual parts of Ricky's routine are parts of other routines, such as the routine in Hocus Pocus, Junior, he is the one who has put this together, so it really should remain his.

Bill… The Paul Fox Cups that Ricky is using, are they original Paul Fox Cups made as combo cups or were the modified at a later time?
Thanks, Bruce |

I would say only Ricky knows. And what difference does it matter? He could have had everything he uses custom made, and that's his business...
I don't mean to be rude, here, but what a pro uses and has made is his and many of the top performers do have all their props made to order. An example was my closing bit in comedy clubs. All the props were custom made and there are no others like them anywhere. They were made for my by the late Les Smith of Owen Magic. Same goes for Marvyn Roy's act, all made by Les.

Sorry Pete if my question tweaked you… I was curious as to their origin from a historical perspective. I never heard of Combo Paul Fox Cups before and was curious.
Thanks, Bruce |

While it is a beautiful routine, what makes it so great is not the cups, or the bowls, or wand, or any other prop. What makes it so great is RICKY. His style is so unique, I really think he could make anything entertaining. He comes across sounding like a college professor, just a little bit of a snobby know-it-all. But still very friendly and he backs up everything he says.

AGREED Pepka!
Technically...ANYONE of us could get up there and do his EXACT routine. When you break it down, the mechanics are quite simple. Nothing too knuckle busting...all common sleights and sequences. We could resight his exact script! Guess what...? WE WOULD SUCK! Why? B/c we're NOT Ricky! ONLY he can be him just as we can only be us. To the original poster, I hope you were not asking so you could go out and try and steal his routine. That would make me very sad....

You know, even if I saw anyone do Mr. Jay's rountine, really, really well, I would still think very little of them.

Here's how the answer should read:
No, it's not written down, and only RJ knows exactly what cups he's using. It's important for you to know that RJ doesn't speak openly, or publish any of his personal work. ...............THERE!!, no "You're not going to steal it, are you?" stuff required. The OP's got three posts, and he asked a couple of simple questions that required only very simple answers. |

Regardless of three posts or three thousand posts, I think his questions were answered anyway.

As far as the source of the cups, well, I seriously doubt that Danny Dew ever made a chopped PF cup. It's all really irrelevant. As Pete so eloquently put it, pro's have the things they need made special for them.
BTW, the chandelier that Marvyn used was made at Ren Clark's Perfect Circle Piston Ring company when Marvyn was staying in Fort Worth. Ren had some of the best machinists in the country working for him. When I was working the Renaissance Festival circuit, there were several people who wanted a broom suspension like mine. The assistant could run backstage to pick up her tip basket, shed the gaff and be back out before I finished my hat pass lines. Good luck finding another one like mine!!!! The design is inside my head. The actual work was done by two different machinists. There is a guy who has been hounding me for a couple of years to tell him where to get a set of cups like the ones Tommy Wonder used. I have no idea who made Tommy's cups for him, but they were custom spun. I'm glad to see how much of a storm this post has kicked up.

But there is a difference here, Sir Richard. Those people you call "Bill Malone clones" were doing a routine that was published and sold legitimately.
So they may have figured that they were doing something that was legitimate. But competition magic is not like "American Idol." On AI, they are not looking for original songs, but for original ways of interpreting them.

What's the point of even trying to emulate Ricky Jay's routine? He sounds authoratative about the history of the cups and balls becasue he IS an authority on conjuring history; the delivery of the lines works because of Mr Jay's own unique dry humour. It's not about whether the Paul Fox cups are gaffed or not: the audience would be none the wiser whatever type of cup he used (chopped or not). The whole point is to develop a routine that plays to your own strengths.
