My silky doves are solid white. They look great, but I have seen some that look a bit scruffy. Mine stay really clean, but I have them in a nice tall cage in my home. Yes, the java dove is the one most commonly used by magicians.

I am glad the "dove" owner would not release the doves [aka: white homing pigeons] during a thunderstorm. You likely don't want white homing pigeons for your act. They are pretty big and they poop a lot. They are also comparatively tough to hand-train. But doves are easy to work with!

I love white homers and I have used one in a past show, but they are NOT to be confused with java doves or silky doves.

Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

We have a homing pigeon couple in our area that specialize in releasing them for special events, weddings, funerals, grand openings etc.... They have a flock of over 200 white homing pigeons. Occaissionally, we will borrow a few to release during an outdoor show in the area.

We use a large production box, similar in workings to a square circle. Up to 6 of the pigeons can fit in it without any problems. We do not handle them other then to take them from the travel cage and put them in the production box. When the time comes to produce them, we only have to open the box top and they fly out and away. It really gets a great reaction from the audience.

The owners of the homing pigeons only let us do the shows with their birds within 60 miles of their home. They also do not let us use them during fall and spring hawk migration periods.

If you do not have to buy them and maintain them, they are great to use when you can. We call the owner when we get home from the show and often the birds have beat us back.

Autumn,

Wait until he needs to move the bird's tail down instead of up! It is called a Dove Pan after some thought!

Ha! Good one, Bob! I have had white pigeons released at an outdoor show in Memphis, once. Fortunately, they did not fly over my head!
