Ive been studying mentalism for over a year, although I feel quite confident with what I learned so far,I only had the chance to perform at once (expect family , friends and people on street etc.) It was for a company, there was a seminar about mind and I gave a speech for 15 mins and shown them a few stunts,it went very well, they all liked it very much but..
Im neither from US nor from UK. In my country, mentalism is unknown. Magic is also very limited, what people think when they first hear about magic is 'rabbit from hat' or david Copperfield, I don't even want to talk about mentalism. I'm turkish by the way ( from istanbul) so I am having that will to perform,I really want to go out and do it but I don't know where to approach, who to talk. Any advices from mentalist from countries where the situation is similar? |

I think that your situation is very advantageous for you in that you break the mold of what is expected. It puts you in a different league than the other mystery entertainers and makes you unique.

At Mindvention last year there were a couple of guys from Turkey, Istanbul, I believe. I am very sorry that I have forgotten their names, but perhaps someone else who was there will remember. They were very entertaining. I am sure they could give you some suggestions if you could get in touch with them.
Other than that, you might check with a couple of local coffee houses, bars, or restaurants. Talk to the owner or manager, show him a few effects and to try to get permission to do walk-about for tips. Best of luck to you. Cheers ..... Charles |

Presumably Turkish society has notions of the paranormal and an awareness of psychology? Providing that's the case, I can't see why it would be difficult to position yourself.

No,there is no poblem with society at all, people are aware of that,I just see how everyone in US can find places to perform easily, so I was wondering to I can approach for a parlor-stage kind of performance, I would prefer that to restaurant mentalism. Thanks for the advices so far.

Hi daghank. Parlor types can start by doing a special evening for a friend in their home and handing out business cards.
I can relate to what you say about starting up mentalism, I'm sure we all can. I remember telling people I was a magician and some people being turned off. A friend gave me a line many years ago when I got involved in mentalism. It's this, when someone says "what do you do?" you answer them by pausing as if deep thought before replying: "I'm a kind of a magician". It's an intruiging answer, I promise. I think that's becaus it simply doesn't make sense and they feel a need to find out more. Suddenly your not pushing to show what you have. Rather they 'ask' you to express what you just said. You read their mind, stop their pulse, bend their coin, change the time in their watch etc and.... well you begin to move forward. Remember, if you do this once every day, even as a hobby, it's good. Twice is very good and three times is excellent. Seems slike uch a childlike piece of advice I know, but it simply works. Good luck, bobser. ps: I assume English is not your first language. Therefore I liked the titile of your post. It made me smile... happy (and scary)memories.

Hey bobser,
Yes english isn't my first language,Ive been reading tons of things on Café for a long time, advices, thoughts and all. I bought necessarily books, dvds and props so I feel like I'm ready to perform for people, I had enough with family, friends and some people at Cafés, its not that I feel like I'm the best,I just want to take a new step and try performing for real people. How do you suggest me to organise that parlor thing at a friends home? Just tell him to invite everyone? and I guess I should get a business card |
