Hello all, I recently viewed a movie on coolers starring Alec Baldwin & ???. The movies plot involves this loser that the casino employs to approach a crap table, roulette wheel and other games when someone starts to get hot. He supposedly cools off the hot patron.
My question is, is there any truth to this or is it just Hollywood malarky?

I don’t know but my brother in-law would be good at the job as he is a right bock.

It doesn't matter if the Cooler works or not, it only matters if people think he works.
When a cooler touches or brushes (or just sits beside) the lucky patron, a lot of things happen that are explainable, from the dealer changing up his shuffle and rhythm of the deal to the cocktail waitress changing the frequency she bothers the "lucky guy" with a new drink to slight changes to how the Pit Boss treats him. Basically everybody who works at the casino, and who knows the Cooler has been put into play changes how they behave..........which of course tosses up the lucky guys play as a result. So the likely answer would be yes, the Cooler works, but probably not for the reasons that make good movie scripts. Tommy's brother-in-law would make a great Cooler, as he already has enough folks who believe in him, and that would change their behavior if he was put into play. |

And it's not a great movie. Well, I'm nasty. When they're to work over the dice cheat wife it's not that bad. I suspected something weird with her, but not that .

I thought it was good. No big explosions, GCI, or south park but enough of a film for little old me.

So in order for the cooler to do his stuff patrons have to know the reputation of the cooler as the harbinger of bad luck. Correct?
Do casinos employ these guys?

Interesting thinking Silverking, makes sense!
I thought the movie was pretty good and I like W. Macey(sp?) and the girl but absolutely can't stand Baldwin although he does play a good scumbag (no acting)! |

Casinos will put employees in to round out games and they do not have to tell you unless asked if the player is using the casinos money. It is hard to play against guys who are not playing their own chips. I know, cuz I'm the worlds worse player and don't need the extra aggrivation.

I'm sure there's been stretches when most of us here have thought our best option for a future career might be as a Cooler!

Most of us card cheats are our own Coolers especially when we are not cheating (playing fair), we have so much bad luck it's unbelievable.
A Cooler can stand next to me if he wants when I'm cheating; he will not change the out come of the thrashing my vic is going to get. All I'm going to do is blame the vic's bad luck on the Cooler and give him a couple of dollars for helping me out just to make the con look good; now if the vic get's mad, he's going to blame and beat up the Cooler, not me. Respectfully, Doc |

They were (not so) "new" decks and all that was required of the dealer was a false opening shuffle. No need to spill coffee on the cards either. Management could change decks at regular intervals and that's just the way it was. No pretense necessary, they just brought it in cold. Hence, the "cold deck". Well that's what makes sense to me but in all honesty my existence wasn't even imagined yet when the term cooler was originated so don't take my word for it. I'm sure some experts here will correct me by telling me that a cold deck is one that actually is cooler in temperature than the deck that is to be switched out because it has not been in play and has not been handled by the players and a good mechanic may even be able to detect the difference. Or perhaps someone will retell the one about the stacked decks being stored secretly in the refrigerator or icebox while waiting for the hostess to deliver it to the mechanic to be rung in secretly on the suckers deal. And while we are at it... maybe a player by the name of Hemingway who deliberately cut off his middle finger at the first joint to improve his bottom deal will "mail" himself an ace, complete with correct postage attached. |

A fellow said; "An owner of a major Las Vegas strip casino once experienced a streak of losing substantial amounts of money to a few "high rollers." He did not attribute this losing streak to normal volatility in the games, but to bad luck. His solution was simple. He spent the evening spreading salt throughout the casino to ward off the bad spirits. Before attributing this example to the idiosyncrasies of one owner, his are atypical only in their extreme. Superstition has long been a part of gambling - from both sides of the table. Superstitions can lead to irrational decisions that may hurt casino profits. For example, believing that a particular dealer is unlucky against a particular (winning) player may lead to a decision to change dealers. As many, if not most, players are superstitious. At best, he may resent that the casino is trying to change his luck. At worst, the player may feel the new dealer is skilled in methods to "cool" the game. Perhaps he is even familiar with stories of old where casinos employed dealers to cheat "lucky" players."
