I'll bet the Carvin StageMate and external speaker (or more if needed) which is all battery with it's nice large drivers and a great design would beat it for 1/4 the price.
And you can't get much more convenient and portable than that. I'm guessing the L1 is $1700. Imagine what you could get in Mackie or JBL with that kind of money.

The Bose is a modified line-array, a very different type of speaker from a normal Passport type system.
The line-array technology may not be appropriate for a typical magic show, and I would strongly suggest that you do some additional research into the concept of line-arrays before considering investing in the Bose package for the purposes as would be typical of a Café user. It's important to note that, because the line-array was designed for a very specific function in sound reinforcement, using it outside of that "specific function" could not only be a waste of money, but could also result in a sizable number of folks who are sitting in your audience not being in the pattern of the speaker, and therefore unable to hear clearly. The above is less my opinion than it is the hard math behind the dispersion pattern of a line-array. It's worth remembering that Bose is an engineering company that is in the business of creating products that can be marketed as unique. There's often a large price to pay (financially and acoustically)for using "unique" products......and there's no gurantee that they sound any good, just that they're unique. ........or put more simply, there's probably a very good reason you've never seen anything from other companies that looks like the Bose L1 |

I'm not an expert on sound...but I attended a school show that Ken Northridge performed. It was a very good show and the sound was excellent. I noticed 2 very big house speakers mounted up on the wall and assumed that Ken was plugged into the house sound.
When I asked him about it...he pointed me to his Bose system. I didn't even notice it because it looked a bit alien as far as sound systems go (it was the first time I've seen this type). The Bose system was set off to one side of Ken's set up...yet some how the entire room was filled with powerful sound...thats why I was fooled and thought it was the house system. I own a Fender Passport 150 and its pretty easy to set up, but not as easy as the Bose system. The Bose breaks down and sets up very easily. I can attest first hand that the sound that the Bose provided was excellent in a large venue. The debate that Bose may be overrated or you can get another great sounding PA at a better cost is valid...but ease of set up and transportation must be factored in too. Rich B. |

Actually, when I was pro audio manager for Guitar Center we has several of these in our live room. They sound clear and crisp however they are a bit pricey. For the best effect youd need two if you're in a large space, even tough the dispersion is 180 degrees. I personally loathe the passport, Fender should stick to guitars and amps.
There is a company called B52 and they make a powered pa system called the matrix, I think it is wonderful. not only that the customer service and support is out of this world. You can litterally call B52 and talk to Avi the owner if there are any issues. Worth a look if you ask me. |

When Bose came out in the late 60's they were VERY inefficient but great sounding systems. We were using Altec-Lansing A7 "Voice of the Theater" cabinets with bi-radial horns which was the standard of the industry. You could fill an auditorium with 40 watts. Bose came out with their classic 901's with 8 drivers each and sounded amazing but required about 3 times the power for the same output.
The 901's were the height of the Bose popularity through the 70's. They are always looking for the most cutting edge design including the current line-array technology which can direct a very pure sound in a straight line without the usual spread and fall off. No one can say the sound isn't good. I'm just not sure it's the most efficient system for most situations. If you've got the money to blow... why not! Personally, I use Carvin concert stacks and have 3 sets of cabinets for about every size venue. They are a great value for the money.

I don't think efficiency has anything to do with whether people like bose or not. If you have a low wattage amp, you need more efficient speakers. If you have really efficient speakers you can get away with a lower watt amp. And actually they had 9 drivers. 1 pointed forward.
The Bose 901s have big huge full sound. That's what people liked. However their design lacked nice highs due to the junky drivers they used. They also lacked nice lows due to the small size of the junky drivers. Putting the speakers into corners of a room (not just bose but any speakers) will boost the bass sound. That's what worked well with the bose. Since (all but one of) the drivers point backwards, they bounced off the back walls and that is what helped give it that "big" sound feeling. That's what people liked. They sounded big. The problem is that, for those that cared, the sound was kind of mushy and you can't really pick out where certain sounds are coming from. With good speakers (and a good system) you can pinpoint where instruments are from side to side and from front to back. One reviewer said that the Bose 901s were "The perfect speaker.. for simulating exactly what it sounds like at a concert...." Not bad. Unfortunately the last half of the sentence was .... "... from the worst seat in the house." They have big impressive sound that fills the room. It's just not very accurate and has a horrible sound stage. If that's what you like and you also like to spend a lot of money, and you like having a "bose" logo on things for your friends to see they come over go for it. I'd recommend some nice PSB speakers that are cheap and sound fantastic. And instead of the horrible bose headphones look for Grado. They really kick butt. Even the cheapest $65 ones. I bought them for my daughter and she only listens to her ipod with those now.

I'm going to try to rent the Compact Bose system for a show on Thursday. I'll put up a review if I'm able to get it.

Here is a little fun fact about the Fender PD-250. The speakers were developed and last I heard, manufactured by (drum roll please) Bose. The original Fender was ALL Fender, when they developed the PD series Fender and Bose partnered up on the project and shortly after, the Bose name was taken out of the marketing material. I had a one-sheet that actually said something like "The all new Fender/Bose PD-250"
My advice for a magician would be to stay away from the Bose "sticks" I also think they are over rated. JBL and Mackie, as mentioned before do make great products. Oh and I did use a PD-250 for about a year, and then I grew out of it. I wish I kept the system for smaller gigs, as it was a great little unit. Fitz

Yes I heard that too but I didn't bring it up earlier to muddy the water. I think they did some consulting on the project. Perhaps fender figured that they were just a marketing company and took them off the project.

While I agree with the sentiments expressed in general, if you compare the different products and conclude that you like the Bose better, then just go and buy it and use it. I have many friends who have purchased the Bose noise cancelling headphones and whatever the latest compact system that is available and have been completely happy. I've stopped trying to convince them that they could have had higher quality for far less money.
It is like other brand loyalty. Coke drinkers drive Toyotas. I used to be active in a kite club that held an annual festival that was partially sponsored by Bose. I don't remember details, and certainly don't know about cost, but Bose provided a public address system that did a great job covering a large field and ajoining parking lot. The speakers looked like gigantic 901's, but had drivers in a different configuration than the home speaker system.

The people who I've talked to who have used the Bose Compact rave about it. I just purchased a Bose L1 Model 1. It's sound is magnificent. I highly recommend it.

Compared to what? In what venue?
What size outdoor venue would you be willing to stake your reputation that the bose system would be magnificent and a great value?

Some folks have posted that they own, or have used, or have heard, the Bose system.
Some have posted that they have not owned, or have not used, or have not heard it. Some love it, and some don't. Some have challenged every positive comment made about it. Being tired & grumpy at the moment, I could do without the latter. Am I alone here? Seacrest OUT!

Just goes to show that sound, like beauty, is in the ear of the beholder. Hearing pluses and minuses is always great. I have noticed from many many shows that a) most magicians use too small a system for the venue and b) Bose L1s and L2s are only good in a large venue (especially outside) if you have more than one set up. I just do not believe the average watcher of a magic show really cares.

I have used a Bose L1 w/ one sub unit for over 3 years now. This would be the original one, what is now called the L1 CLASSIC.
I have found it to be and excellent system. It is 750 watts and has filled the largest rooms. It sets up in less that 5 minutes and is just about ready to go after you plug it in. The speaker dispersement is 180 degrees. So I can set it up just about any where in the room and it covers. What I usually do it set it up behind me with a jet set in front of it and then even the sound seems like it is MAGIC because you can't see it. It delivers a very natural sound and even when I crank it up for a large group it dosen't have that loud "pushing" sound. I never get complaints from people saying that it is too loud not even from people sitting near it. On the down side... It is at least 2 extra trips to the car which is a bummer. The new smaller one is advertized as only one trip but I don't know. It dosen't work well with a LAV mic, while it is impossible to get it to feedback with a regular mic, a LAV is tricky and feeds back like crazy. A passport system is an excellent system for magicians. It is simple and can be moved in one trip which is always good. It will fill most rooms and it is more traditional and easier to wrap your mind around. The reason you haven't seen other companies jumping on the band wagon is because BOSE was so far ahead of the curve and defends their patents like crazy. It has taken other companies like Fishman, Anchor and Peavey 5 years to catch up. I have seen many magicians, as I am sure most of you have also. Let's just say as a group they are not known for excellent sound. I have seen dealers try and convince a room full of magicians that a $29 battery powered toy guitar amp was a "EXCELLENT SOUND SYSTEM THAT IS LOUD ENOUGH TO FILL THE LARGEST ROOM" and then sold out!!!! I spent 2k for the BOSE system and another $1000 on wireless and the system has never let me down and I have gotten many compliments. If excellent sound, easy set up and no feedback issues are important to you the BOSE system is awesome! But it will cost you some bucks. The Passports are great for smaller shows maybe to 200 people and just great in general. There are also good systems from Fishman, Kustom, B52 and others. But please spend a little money and get something pro. Don't use the battery powered repurposed junk that is out there. |
