I was told by my hypnosis trainer the same thing I have read in a few places and that is that people under hypnosis do not do anything that goes against their moral values or principles.
But I don't think that means necessarily that they do what they "want to do", because when you have someone in trance and you start tickling a voodoo doll, or when you tell them to act like something ridiculous and they are conscious about that, and later they say they didn't want to do it but their body did not respond; Then, I think they do it because it was a response to an order received at an unconscious level that did not go against their moral values, but probably they didn't want to do it. He made them do things, they were WILLING to do actually, by changing the moral fiber of those who followed them. He manipulated them and lied to them, became a god figure. This is psychologically different from hypnosis.

I am struggling to see the difference between changing someones mind with hypnosis and brainwashing
From what I understand brainwashing is forced hypnosis. Brainwashing (also known as thought reform or re-education) consists of any effort aimed at instilling certain attitudes and beliefs in a person — beliefs sometimes unwelcome or in conflict with the person's prior beliefs and knowledge.[1] Motives for brainwashing may include the aim of affecting that individual's value system and subsequent thought-patterns and behaviors. the fact that he manipulated and lied to them to give them a new set of beliefs is in actual fact still hypnosis. The only article I could find on google said the same hypnotherapy: you have to want to be hypnotized you won't do anything that a hypnotherapist suggests that you don't want to puts you in a pleasant deeply relaxed state usually makes you feel refreshed after a session seeks to make you a happy member of your community What Brainwashing Is Brainwashing, in comparison: is done without the patient's consent forces your body into a hypnotic state through intimidation, starvation and sleep deprivation does not make you feel better afterwards seeks to isolate you completely from everyone else wants to make you do something you don't Both are Hypnosis |

Hypnosis by dictionary definition is a suggestable sleep like trance state. Artificially induced.
Although many are now including any form of communication that affects the unconscious. Take your pick. |

As far as I know, the methods used for brain washing are not nice at all! Definitely not as a normal hypnotic induction.

So hypnosis is a process
Brainwashing is a process but both get people into a suggestible state. |
