Scott Alexander has one commercially available called "Velocity". Although I don't personally have it, it's been given rave reviews by those who do. I would certainly try it as all of the safety features have been well thought out and developed through years of design and use.

While not a bullet catch, Gerry McCambridge has a great prediction effect where he wears a white suit and spectators shoot random places on his body with a paint ball, and of course the prediction matches. I've seen Chris Kenner do this with a velcro suit where the audience throws fuzzy balls at him. I'm not sure if he was the originater of this or not.

I don't remember his name, but on Masters of Illusion on one of the very first shows, there was a maji who had someone come up on stage, put his initials on a paint ball, load it into the gun, laser scope it and fire it at his mouth (all very Penn and Teller like).
The gun is fired, he catches the paintball but swallows it. He then pulls out a spool of thread and performs SAW (cutting into his throat) and yanks the thread out to have the signed paintball threaded thru the thread (ala Dan Sperry's Lifesaver). Don't know his name and don't know if it's a marketed effect...but there it is...

I forgot about that Chris. His name is Florian Zimmer. He's from Germany and does a great act. He won at WMS a few years ago. That paintball thing though, did nothing for me. He just mushed 2 effects together and got......mush.

That was Velocity that Zimmer did on the Masters show. I really liked what he did with it up until the end. I agree with Pepka. It kind of "muddied" the effect.
I've been doing Velocity for nearly 20 years. I also created the Paintball prediction effect that McCaimbrige did. All this info is covered on the Velocity training DVD. Need info about the effect? Just let me know. Scott |

If you really caught the ball in your mouth, then you would show it between your teeth...right? I also am one of the people who HATE the SAW effect. I think it's silly b/c there is NO MOTIVATION for cutting into your neck other than "hey, look what I can do!" With that said, Dan Sperry's LIFESAVER is what has made me FALL IN LOVE with the SAW effect. For the first time, there is motivation for doing SAW. You swallow a lifesaver which is something we all eat and he wants to retrieve it. Makes sense. There's not point to swallow a paint ball. Just silly.... But the original poster just asked if such an effect existed...so that's what I remembered....

Yeah...
dart plume is initialed... Im leaning towards a blow gun bullet catch where the motivation is that you catch the dart... all coy and happy the "native" didn't hit your jugular... and it is the exact dart initialed by the spec... now thinking of how SAW would fit in.. maybe a second dart is then fired while you are cheering victory as the "native" seems annoyed at your avoidance of death.. - only to have it shoot in your mouth, and you swallow it.. you panic.. the poison starts to kick in... maybe a stigmata effect for some geek magic ... then the motivation to go into the SAW to remove the dart from your body and allow the poison to subside... instead of saw, you could even do a needle removal from your abdomen or chest (ala sideshow methods) thoughts? Just a concept Ive been bouncing around...

If I remember right, McCambridge's version was just another prediction using the Master Prediction System correct....nothing special about the paintball part of it, right?
Could easily use a cheaper method of predicting the paintball hits if you didn't want to pay for the MPS. Personally id just hang an envelope. We thought about adding something like this to the show for all the comedy you can get out of it, but in reality, most locations we play would be a hassle to set up and protect the surroundings from stray paintballs and splattering. |

I like the paint ball version however a few years ago I came up with a version using a high powered Dart gun.
its acompitition air pistol -- this aint no toy. it shoots a 1 1/2 inch steel tipped dart and I catch in my teeth magically that is. any way it plays great. sam

Back in the 1920's and 30's a few made their reputations catching cannonballs. I wonder when someone is going to bring back this oldie but goodie. There's a nice depiction of a cannonball catcher in the semi-nonfiction Peter Bogdanovich film "The Cat's Meow"
