I would like to get into cups and balls, but first I need to decide one what set to purchase. If anyone has any tips on what/where to buy my first set or if it should be expensive or not I would greatly appreciate it. I have been speaking to one of my mentors about c and b's but would just like to hear other people's opinions.

If you can go and visit a shop try them out, some fit better into your hand than others. Avoid any that need really shining to keep the colour.
Do a search on the Magic Café as this topic has been posted several times before.

My only advice to start is to NOT buy a tiny set of cups. Buy the biggest cups you can comfortably manipulate and afford.

Get something that is large and heavy. Stay away from aluminium light cups. Also there loads of great books and DVDs. But Michael Ammar DVD is a good sound start.

I would suggest getting a COMBO cup set where one cup is also a chop cup. It adds more potential to what you can do and does not limit you from normal cup moves.
Bazar and Ickle Pickle make nice starter sets. And believe it or not - MagicMakers has a nice starter set that is priced well. We sell a number of them and people have always been happy with the quality to cost. You are going to grop them, bang them, beat them... get mad and throw them hahaha so I suggest a nice starter set first.

I would also recommend a combo set to start, mainly because you can do seemingly miracles for the people that are familiar with the cheap plastic sets. Also depending on your skill level there is a wealth of information available on cups and balls and chop cups and their handling. I normally start with a simple cup & ball routine and eliminate 2 of the cups & balls and go into a chop cup routine with 2 surprise loads at the end. I hope you enjoy the C&B's as much as I have over the past 38 years.

I know why folks will prefer the heavier cups, but I can tell you from over 35 years using all different kinds of sets, etc. that the cheaper spun aluminum cups are not bad at all. Like above I heartily suggest you do not get a small plastic set if you really want to work with them, but there are $25-40 sets of Alum cups that are just fine to work with and will give you an idea of what's involved without spending a fortune. And, frankly.....the down and dirty is that they ALL DO THE EXACT SAME THING! Cup thru cup move, etc. all work with all the various cups.
Best,

Delmar… Out of curiosity, which set of Cups have you decided on? What were your determining factors?
Good luck, Bruce |

Use plastic cups that you can get at any store and paper balls. Then see Vernon's Routine in Stars of Magic.
If you like it, and find that it is adding value to your act, THEN go and purchase a proper set.

Penguin Copper Cups (made by Magic Makers, in China, and wholesaled by Murphy's Magic) are great. Leave them outside for 2-3 months and they look ancient and well used or keep them shiny, your call. For $100 a set (sometimes on sale for less), these heavy (more than a 1/4 lb. per cup), solid spun copper cups are a bargain.
The balls that these cups come with are a bit small (3/4 inch), but that is easily fixed by buying a 7/8 inch set for under $10.00 (Uday crocheted balls). Also, get 3 of Uday's 1-7/8 inch crocheted balls too, for final loads. And yes, 3 - 7/8 inch balls fit on the saddle and under another cup perfectly! There has been comments that the first few runs of these were a bit inconsistent. My set were made in mid-to-late 2008 and all the problems seem to have been dealt with. They look great and work wonderfully. Buy them from a reputable dealer that will allow you to return them if you don't like them. http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=742 dsalley13 |

Bill Malone...Here I go again, vol. I....He uses the plastic cups & balls, and the routine is awesome....These guys can take a cheap toy store item and perform super routines with it...Look at Mike Skinner's ball & vase routine...

Put the time in to perfect this age old magic trick, the responses you'll get are more than worth the time spent.
