I was wondering what other people think are the best national anthems in the world?
I personally think the Russian national anthem has the most stirring tune but I'd have to say the Star Spangled Banner has the best lyrics. |

I like the US one but when I was in South America and had to stand at attention while they played the host countries anthem lemme tell you, some have very long versions.

When I went to school we always hated as Aussies singing God Save The Queen to that German woman in London, but since we changed to the Sex Pistols version, it has enjoyed a revival of popularity.

I will not comment upon the irony of that post, Destiny.

I like the 'Star Spangled Banner'. The tune is an old English drinking song:

Ours in insipid both in English and French. The French version does contain the nice couplet:
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée, Il sait porter la croix The rest isn't so great, but I do like that image. And of course the composer Calixa Lavallée left Canada for the US where he lived out his days making bigger money than he could at home. John

Flower of Scotland is gorgeous! Love hearing it for ruby game! Pity scotland have such poor rugby team
I love our anthem(Irish) though I'm biased there..we actually have two anthems for rugby, second anthem represents players from both north and south of the border. I think my all time favourite is the South African one.I love it! First heard it way back when when south Africa were hosting the rugby world cup. Magic! Pete |

Of those I have heard, I really like USA, France, Russia (the current one, which is much the same as the former Soviet Anthem).
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

If you want to hear a smattering of national anthems, you should watch the podium ceremonies at Formula One races: they play the national anthem for the country from which the winning driver comes, followed by the national anthem for the country from which the winning constructor comes.
For years, many people thought that the German national anthem followed by the Italian national anthem was a single tune. |

Airship, thanks for the link. That is interesting. I didn't know Francis was a hack. His version is better though.
