Hello, Puppeteers!
I'd like to put together a brief act with a rabbit puppet in which it would perform from a box. The box is both an attention-getting device and a container for assorted props the rabbit will use, as well as serving to cover my arm while working the puppet. My hope is to make the rig's modus operandi a bit less obvious, even while working in the round, so I thought about a "Daylight Seance" kind of approach, probably using welding gauntlets (plus safety glasses, maybe full welding leathers to emphasise the "danger" of the "animal"). Any tips you can pass along regarding construction that would help me avoid reinvention of the wheel would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Leland |

Or you could wait for Steve Axtell to make a remote controlled rabbit!

I used an old box to make a stage for my "baby" in a box bit.
It has doors in the front and both sides. I covered it with bright primary colors. The baby and I do parodies of "Charlie that huuuuuuuuurt", and Charlie the Unicorn. Charlie is a cranky baby and I try a lulabye with him. After I think he is asleep, he "gets me" with a loud horn. Never thought about using the "Daylight seance/hand" to ad "realism" to the puppet. In my puppet section..one of them acknowledges that he IS a puppet. Though perhaps not PC, the babies hand gets caught at one time, when a door is closed...(no puppet baby is actually hurt ..as we used a properly trained stunt puppet....his name by the way is "Punch" as in Punch and Joan/Judy.)

Thanks, Harris
Perhaps I'm over-thinking this one, "fleeing where none pursue." You guys with the puppets make it look SOOOO real...as though a bit of green felt actually were alive, playing the banjo and croaking a song badly out of tune. I want a little bit o'dat Magic for my shows! Leland |

I do a routine every Chrismtas with my sheepdog coming out of a present. I built the box from luan ply, making the top a seperate lid, hinged in the back. The back side of the box has a large hole cut in it for my arm. I then covered the box and lid with foil wrapping paper, and added a huge metallic finish bow to the top/lid. I lined the interior with white tissue paper, which hides any hint of a view of my arm. I had my wardrobe designer sew me a seperate arm of the same fabric as my tail coat, to which I added a third hand. This wraps around the side of the box. It looks for all the world like the dog comes jumping out of the box on his own. The kids eat this up. Who wouldn't want a puppy for Christmas ?

Xcellent idea Mark....
I use a dog puppet(without the box or arm) In fact it technically is a stuffed animal..from the 40's or 50's, given as a tie in to the Peter Pan Movie. The dog is very realist looking, and has even been used in a full length play..(puppeteer was in all black, but I digress from the seance tie in)
