I've agreed to do a bridal fair next month, mainly as its for a good cause and hopefully will bring a few extra gigs in, but I've not got a clue what to do. I'm taking my close up table to work on but do I just do a few demos and explain what I can offer at the weddings, or do I specifically stay away from wedding tricks i.e anniversary waltz as they will see those on the day?
Any info anyone has will be great cheers

Tricks that leave them with a souvenir work well, something to remember you by. I'm thinking it would be more along the lines of stand-up magic, maybe even like a tradeshow. Rope, chop cup, egg bag, the good stuff...

My instinct would be to include at least one trick in a very short, punchy routine that involves them handling your business card. I wouldn't worry too much about a "business card trick" unless you have a favourite that you use all the time, but even if you use it for a stab force with a deck of cards, it just gets it out there without you having to "hand it out". Definitely save wedding specific stuff for an actual event, but treat it as a performance, not a "demo" or a "pitch" - you won't have to explain what you offer if you show them what you can do - perhaps produce a short flier with some more details as to your service so you can hand it to interested parties rather than come out of "performance mode" too much. I'd probably use the back of the flier for a prediction trick and make it part of the show, using slightly tongue in cheek patter to strike a balance between sales pitching and being a performer.

Barry,
This is indeed a type of trade show. Know your sponsor! Work hard on your contribution to solving his/her problem at the event. Jeff McBride will be here on The Café next week answering questions. In his lectures, he offers a very good and personal bit of business that leaves the person entertained with a small flower that they can keep. By all means, quiz him about it. You might like to use it. Good Luck! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
