I have long enjoyed bouldering as one of my hobbies. In bouldering and other rock climbing arts we have to use subtle counterpressures to maintain balance on the rock. It occurred to me recently that a lot of this pressure sensitivity crosses over between palming and rock climbing. One on a larger level, and one smaller.
Has anyone thought of any other unlikely disciplines that have helped their magic skills?

My job is Wall Climbing instructor and I do a lot of Belaying. Since I am working with the ropes a lot, my palm and fingers are constantly dirty, therefore it prevents me from wanting to touch any of my magic props. A brand new deck of Bicycle cards would be ruin with my roped dirtied fingers, my expensive crocheted balls would also be ruined. Well, I could wash my hands 500x a day to do my magic, but then my boss would not be happy with whatever I am doing.
Also, working with ropes and climbing makes my fingers a little stiff, so I am not sure how this helps with magic. I am in the climbing gym 5 days a week for the past 7 years, so I am not that great a magic yet. I play racquetball, inline speedskating, speed biking, and do a little weight lifting which all makes me calmer and gives me the opportunity to meet people. The only bad thing about all this is that it takes up time and is distracting me from my magic training. The good news is I hope to be healthier, live a longer life, and giving me a chance to perform magic well into my 90's. Have fun folks! |

I have found that playing the banjo and the accordion have helped me immensely. Both instruments help to develop dexterity, and they give you experience in accepting rejection.

Martial arts (Taiji and Wing Chun), hypnosis and writing and delivering training material have helped a reat deal but magic has also helped these too...
I wish I could play an intrument like Bill, I did try guitar but didn't manage to find the time to fully commit. |

Hay Bill can you bring your banjo to the café and play a bit for us. Sunday afternoon over a iced mocha be sweet.
Enjoy your magic,

I've found that I can classic palm a lot more convincingly with my left hand (even though I'm right handed), which I can only attribute to the fact that my main hobby over the past 30 years has been playing guitar, which develops dexterity and the muscles in the left hand.
Also, I recently found that doing chin-ups on a bar in the basement has helped considerably with every aspect of SOH.

Hey, I got a great idea: Learn Sign Language and fingerspelling, lots of dexterity. Get the biggest Dictionary you can find and fingerspell every word page after page, this should give your fingers a serious work-out! Maybe then you could be the greatest XCM that ever lived!

Great idea! Then practice holding out coins when signing. Couldn't ask for better practice at getting in an out of various grips and palms.

A number of disciplines have helped me. I study philosophy, psychology and alternative medicine. They help me to keep the right attitude, learn faster and keep me functioning. Really, these things help my magic in more ways than I could even begin to list.
I cringe when I hear that a fellow magician has carpal tunnel surgery, because it usually causes more harm than good, in the long run. There's a better, cheaper way to deal with it. I'm also amazed that magicians have few ways to look at situations, when viewing problems as opportunities could help them so much. Some of the young magicians think that magic will make them cool. But, I tell them that being truly confident and having a sense of responsibility will be what makes them cool, as well as making their magic better. Having a healthy perspective on life will work wonders. |

I don't know if my sleight of hand benefits my guitar playing or the other way around but I thouroughly enjoy both so it's a win win for me!

I actually was planning to take a sign language class at school this summer but due to budget cuts I can only take one class.

Good news, the FAFSA thing may be working itself out.
If I end up taking the sign language class I will let you know if it helps.

I play soccer. I don't think it helps much.
Reading non-magic books probably helps more than anything, in terms of becoming an interesting person to be around.
