Hello
I performed last night with a group of magicians (I opened the show). Afterwards I was approached by a Talk show host and his producer to do an interview next month. They also want me to perform a few "tricks" (sigh). I've never been on TV before, and I'm not an experienced magical campaigner. However, this should be great for exposing me to the public, so I want to make a good impression. I haven't looked through my books yet, but in the meantime does anybody have any suggestions about what effects work well on TV? I really would like to stay away from weird looking props and cards and tricks with long presentations if possible. I was thinking loops or IT - but that risks being "obvious", if you know what I mean. Maybe I'm over-thinking it. Thanks in advance

What do you mean by "obvious"? If you mean the secret might be exposed to the TV crew or something, don't worry about it. Fearson has done his floating cig on TV many times to great acclaim. Just about anything you do live can be done on TV - just make sure you rehearse so they don't throw something unexpected on you. If something is angle sensitive you have to tell them so the camera man doesn't shoot something by mistake.

Don't do loops on TV - trust me. They shine under the studio lights. I love loops, and I perform them everywhere, but not on TV. Bad experience in the past!
Try to do short and visual stuff, that is what it works on TV. VISUAL, FAST and EYE CATCHING are the keywords. |

IT is risky unless you control the lighting. Also avoid pyro or anything that creates a flash.
Try to confine your movements to a fixed area so the camera can focus on it. Avoid extraneous movement. Discuss your routine with the floor director beforehand so they know what to expect. Play to the cameras (and keep your eye on the tally lights). Be ready with an instant "teaser" just in case. They may do an intro shot of you before they cut to commercial for example. Have fun!

Avoid wearing clothing that is too loud, or has thin stripes. Also avoid pure white clothing.
Quick visual magic is best, and anything that involves the host will go over well. Perhaps teach the host a simple quick beginner trick. Be cheerful and upbeat. Learn the names of the host(s) and use them. |

They work great on TV......just don't float objects, quick and fast is the way to go.
