'ello 'ello Jeff! Always good to be able to speak with you in any capacity.

So here's my conundrum: I've done a bit of corporate work over the years, but it has always been through execs or P.R. folks who have happened to see me perform in person at some non-corporate event.

I would like to do more corporate work but, like yourself, I don't exactly have the "conventional" corporate image (I almost never wear a suit or tie... or anything normally worn in a workplace, for that matter) being that I perform as a combination of Renaissance and Modern-Day Bardic Magician.

I've heard different discussions on going into interviews for corporate work and wearing an expensive suit and tie but I feel that it would be me misrepresenting who I am and what I have to offer.

Do you find any kind of a problem with presenting yourself to corporations when they're looking to hire someone or do you use your different image to your advantage?

Thanks again for lending your brain to the Café!

Greetings Daniel, and all...

I was on Street of Cards the other night and saw an upload of one of your videos. I also took the time to look at your website, your video trailers, and some of the text... All of this just one day before I receive this question from you!

Coincidence? ...I think not!

You are right, the McBride persona is not a "normal" conventional, corporate image, but the good news is that there are many not-so-normal corporations who are looking for not-so-normal entertainers. I have found, over the years, that the best way to get corporate work is to have personally met a decision-maker in the company that's hosting the event. I, too, was tempted to "put on the suit," but stayed true to my counter-culture image.

Let's look at the word "image." I-Mage. It is "i" the magician. I feel that if a corporation wants to hire "a magician," let them go and do that. If they want to hire Jeff McBride, they only have one choice. That is the art of branding. You have set yourself apart, Daniel, from being a generic magician. This choice will shut some doors to rooms that if you walked into them you might be judged as "not our kind." The shutting of these doors is a good thing. You will have less blind alleys to walk into, waste less of your time entertaining soulless sleeping corporate zombies in their dull gray suits.

Your path will lead you to where there is electricity, color, and excitement. Many performers have started their careers on the RenFaire stage and have gone on to have successful careers, while staying true to the characters they've developed.

Do not worry about changing your outer skin or being a chameleon. This final quote, by Janius, was found in Oscar Teale's book Higher Magic.

"It is the festive plumage of the royal bird that gives him flight. Strip him of this color, and you bind him to the earth."

Yours with all the colors of the royal peacock,

Jeff
