Jeff, I would like to tell you about a little bright point in my life that recently happened, largely because of some inspiration I got from you at a workshop.
You suggested that we should always "be the magician" and to give our magic as a gift as often as we could. I recently had a series of dentist appointments and "happened" to mention that I do a bit of magic. The dentist became excited and asked if I could teach him a magic trick to help calm some of his more anxious patients. I told him that I would be glad to come up with something to show him on my next visit. The problem was "what"? What is simple enough for a "muggle" to present successfully and still achieve the desired result of relaxing a nervous patient? I came up with a "Hot Rod" routine. In a nutshell, I told him to say that one of his patients is a magician (true) and that he had given him this "beginner's magic wand", and that although it is not a "full strength" wand, like a Harry Potter wand, that it still had some amazing powers. He would say that it has these "power crystals" up both sides of the wand (paddle move) and that each crystal had the ability to affect a certain aspect of our lives - for instance, the red crystal is for strong life force, the blue is for calmness and serenity, the clear one is for clarity and purity, and so forth. Then he would tell his patient to relax and let a number come into their heads and then he could force the single color ("pink" on the hot rod I gave him). He would then say that they had made a great choice because pink is the crystal for healing and protection from pain, and he would then change all of the stones to the pink color. Then he would tell the patient to lay back in the chair and to relax and concentrate on the pink color as he made magical passes over their head so the crystals' power would help to protect them, and that whenever they got nervous during their dental procedure they should "Think Pink". You can see the how the power of suggestion (to relax) and a distraction from pain or fear (think pink) is built into the the presentation. My dentist LOVED it and after I took 15 minutes or so to teach him the paddle moves, he immediately ran off to his office to practice it while his assistant did some prep work. He came back in a while and asked me to help him a bit more with the moves and I admonished him to practice it completely before he tried to use it. He promised that he would show it to me on my next visit in two weeks before he would use it. (that appointment hasn't happened yet). I also tried to impress the idea that he should make the presentation his own so it was natural for him. Jeff, this doctor was so excited about the prospect of having a new tool to use to help alleviate his patients' fears that I suggested that he might be interested in your class designed specifically for physicians and doctors, but when I went to your site, I couldn't find it listed anywhere (probably because of my computer "skills"). Are you still doing this class? Where can I direct my dentist to so he can find out more about it? Thanks for your gift that keeps on giving! I not only received some joy from sharing some magic, so did the dentist, and hopefully his patients in the future will enjoy the benefits of this shared gift.
