My routine would not work at all with the Hobson bag. I just use my own bags and an eggs-actly egg. My routine depends on the bag looking flimsy, and looking the same inside-out as it does outside-out. And the egg being a real egg.
If you use an egg bag properly the bulge is toward the performer and not seen by the audience anyway. The Hobson bag is very well made. Just not for me. Lynetta's are also astoundingly good. Love the material. It's a nice feeling after doing a routine for several years that you can stare at a silly black bag and think.. "wow. I can entertain a bunch of people with just this". I love the egg bag routine. Everybody's routines are so different and that's precisely why I like it. It's one of those props that just dares you to be creative.

After reading your post, I went to The Ambitious Card Website to take a look at your eggbags........ And ....WOW....you have a GREAT price on the Senor Mardo Egg Bag, Frank!!! I have two of them and love the bag and the included Martin Lewis Routine. There are a couple of moves that are very "Senor Mardo-ish" that you can do with this bag that are very magical. I would encourage magicians who have't had a chance to play with a Senor Mardo Egg Bag, to do so. They're terriffic.....but then....just about everything that Martin Lewis puts out is terriffic, right? And yes, I use an Eggs-Actly egg in the Mardo, but prefer using Jeff Hobson's supplied eggs with his eggbag. They fit the Hobson Eggbag perfectly, they're a bit bigger, thus, more easily visable in a larger performing venue, and are super tough. And, I gotta say this................ I would be hard-pressed to find a trick that's better than the egg bag....for any audience.....anywhere! |

Whats a good method for making a rubber chicken appear from inside the bag for a kicker ending? Dan Tong produces a pony glass of liquid, but I need something that will be good for family and kids shows. Any ideas?

I end the routine with the audience member doing the egg bag and pulling the egg out...that comes across very strong.

I've often thought that Lynette at Fabric Manipulations should try and make this bag as the quality of Grant's (if they still make it) leaves a lot to be desired. Which is a pity as it's a great prop that deserves better.

Before anyone does anything they should get the Video (maybe DVD now) on the Egg Bag from http://www.stevensmagic.com It shows several routines and will give you a wider perspective on the trick.
BTW... it is 99% the performer. I would bet Hobson could kill with a borrowed paper bag and a golf ball.

You're right Pete. A great routine is a great routine. The bag merely comes along for the ride.
Just depends on whether you feel like riding in a Mercedes, a BMW, or a Hundai.

I have a routine I have been working on for a long time but haven't performed yet. The storyline is about strange breakfast at a Chinese restaurant with a wonderful Chinese omlet where the chef uses a mysterious bag to produce the egg and I mention the magical omlet pan. The routine ends with me crunching the egg in a magical omlet pan (dove pan) and as I open the pan the rubber chicken flops out as the spell goes horribly wrong and the egg is way over cooked.
So not quite producing the chicken from the bag as you suggest but the effect is similar.

All due respect to Jeff Hobson, but the absolute best routine I have ever seen for the egg bag is John Carney - it's so good in fact I wish I had never seen it. haha
I use an egg bag from Fabric Manipulations, but I would love to try a Hobson egg bag because I am sure it is awesome as well.

I love John's routine as well. I asked John if the routine was in the public domain and "borrowable" and he responded back.... "NO".
I'm glad he did as it forced me to come up with my own completely unique routine which I really like and can be proud of. I have no interest in doing John's routine anymore (nor anyone else's, for that matter). I can now admire it from afar. I've been told "NO" twice about a routine I loved and both times ended up with something I liked even better, and suited me MUCH better. Sometimes "NO" is just what you need to hear to get you motivated to be creative. That was in 2005. I just recently (in the last few months) got my bag routine to this point so it's been a long haul, but very worthwhile.

I agree frank - I never meant to imply that I wanted to steal his or anyone else's routine - I was just tossing John's routine in to the discussion as well.

Researching I found that Magic Magazine published a Jim Steinmeyer routine with a Giant Egg Production finish.
Does anyone have the October 1994 issue of Magic? Can someone scan and email me the Conjuring #20 article. Magic Magazine is sold out. |
