Had a chance Saturday to perform for the first time in maybe 3 or so years. Wasn’t looking for it - a friend asked me to “do some magic” for his 7-year-old’s birthday party. I dropped out of performing because I’m not into the birthday party scene; plus this was going to be in the park, and I don’t dig outdoor gigs. But it was for a friend - so I pulled out my stuff and threw something together. And there was going to be a crowd of parents with children, so I wasn’t going to be at the mercy of a horde of sugar-stoked hellions.
I did: -- TT & silk to shoe (ala Silly Billy) -- Change bag w/ red & yellow silks to orange -- Coloring book (ala Silly Billy) -- Invisible deck (jumbo size) -- Do As I Do -- Burglar Ball -- Twisted Sisters -- Telekinetic Timber Of these, the only routines I had done before were Do As I Do & Burglar Ball! It came off well as a whole show, though parts of it stank: -- Of course I was woefully unprepared to do anything. -- Do As I Do doesn’t work with kids who don’t know cards. -- The TK Timber didn’t go. -- Had a 7-yr-old with the mind of an engineer wanting to examine everything; he didn’t want to bust me, he just wanted to know how it all worked. But I learned some things: -- I was relaxed. No paycheck on the line, I’m among friends, mistakes don’t matter. I had a great time, and it showed. -- Simple with participation and enthusiasm is better than elaborate with no involvement. -- I need some outs for things that don’t go as planned. The Do As I Do wouldn’t have worked with a younger kid, and I should have thrown something else in there - like UF Grant OOTW (I think that’s the red & black one, yes?). And the TK Timber needs and alternate ending for if it doesn’t go. -- Need a better closing trick - dependable and wrapping everything up. -- When the adults are having a good time, the kids will too. And I learned that I still like this stuff!! Ed |

I almost forgot one of the biggest insights:
If they had a good time, they don't care how _you_ think you did! My friend initially asked me how much I would charge. I told him I used to think I was worth getting paid, but now I know better! At the end of the show, which in my opinion was very rough, disjointed, and devoid of any professionalism, he was putting me on his calendar for next year and others wanted me too! Ed |
