I'll re-edit the blog post to make it clearer.

The bottle is laying on it's side the ground about three metres from where the player stands to throw. The upside down tub has to completely cover the bottle. Since, the bottle is about an inch shorter than the tub's diameter, it should be easy.

Is the 'old game' the ring toss? Or are there other variations?

Yes, this is a variation of a ring toss game. The new twist is using a bucket to cover a bottle. Will have to practice this. Do they use a hard type floor like wood or tile?

I think a hard floor is better. A soft surface will stop the erracted roll.

Indeed - an empty PLASTIC bottle is the best for this.
