While I haven't had the pleasure of owning this beauty, I have seen it in action, and it is a stunner. HP got the exclusive on this . . . Wenger (known on Café as "remote guy" as he helps out a lot of electronics-challenged people on the "workshop" area) does great precision electronics and came up with a fascinating way of revealng the card through "runner" leaves which actually curl to shape a chosen card. Bystanders are going to freak out . . . I thought I had seen every kind of card reveal, but this green-thumb approach is new to me. Wegner's got several other RC items up his sleeves, including a new approach to the spirit bell being marketed by Bob Kohler. Be on the lookout; this is an original. I have purchased custom items from Nick, but have no relationship with him or his products. I just think they are awesome.

Very sorry . . . Shows that indeed I do not have long personal ties to Nick Wenger that would bias my views. . . He is an amazing creator, however, and we're all going to know his name very soon.

Nick showed this to me several months ago on the Café, what a great and strange idea! I love it! Great work Nick! Very different indeed! Next you can do a venus fly trap that bends over and picks out a chosen card from a deck!

The artificial venus fly trap is a great idea. . . Perhaps you could do something with Axtell Man-Eating Plant, or a venus fly trap puppet . . .

Is it just the 7 of diamonds or can other numbers and suits be selected?

I received Planted from Hocus Pocus yesterday, and I'm happy to report this looks even more amazing in person than it does in the video demo. And I thought it looked fantastic in the demo!
It is very well made. It truly looks like a real fern type plant. The size of the pot is app. 5" in diameter. The length of the leaves vary, with the longest being around 12". The animation is amazing. You can make the "seven" form first, or the "diamond". When the leaves slowly start to move and bend it's like watching a film special effect. After the leaves form the selected card, they hold their position for a bit and then slowly relax back to their starting position (though you may need to gently reshape them for the next performance.) And the best part (for me at least) is that it's completely silent. Which is perfect if you're performing impromptu in your home or office. For the quality of the craftsmanship, I feel the asking price is extremely reasonable. Nick Wenger has been very accessible here at the Café. And, of course, Hocus Pocus' customer service is second to none. Hope this helps! Joe |

I love the look of this (especially the pace of the transformation) and the fact that it is silent will make it a superb effect.
The question around it just revealing one card probably makes it more useful to a pro but I have to tell you that even as a hobbyist I am really tempted by this beauty. It occurred to me that a really good trick to pull with it would be to have a spectator pick a card and then tell them the card they picked using your magic mind reading powers (maybe even do this twice !!). Then you come clean with them and tell them that you are not really the mind reader, that you have an assistant who is and who has been secretly telling you their card. Have them pick the 7D and then point to the plant behind them which astonishingly "tips you off" as to their chosen card. In the spectators mind the plant has told you the answer three times which sort of hides the force aspect really well. Sigh, I suppose you can tell from the way I am going on about this one that my money is going, going, gone. |
