The first time I that this great flourish was in print was almost 20 years ago!
Sanada was awarded the Tenkai Award. To celebrate each recipient of the award the membership publishes a book. It is in Japanese, so you might have to find a translator.

Sanada lives in Japan so see if you can get his contact via the internet. He is also famous for inventing the "Sanada Gimmick".

If you drop an email to Levent, I bet he knows if it is published in English!

There is actually a little e-book at lybrary.com that explains how to do the circle fan. There are two variations, though; the Sanada fan and the 360 degree fan. The Sanada I've only seen in print recently in the e-book, but the 360 degree fan (which is formed differently) can be found in New Magic of Japan.

Hi All:

I just got back home from a long night out and I noticed this post.

This is all I know:

26 years ago, Sanada taught me his circular fan and interlocked card production. I never got around to perfecting his method for the circular fan. But I fully understand how it works.

I also have a copy of "New Magic of Japan 1988" by Sakai, Goldstein & Kaufman and it it there is "The Three-Sixty Fan" by Naoki Ogi

I compared the text of Naoki Ogi's technique with what I remember about the Sanada Fan. Both methods seem EXTREMELY similar to me. The main difference that I see is that the Sanada Fan leaves the middle finger in the center of the fan and the Ogi technique leaves the index finger in the center of the fan.

Personally I like the Sanada method a little better because the index finger is free to control and retain the cards at the top half of the circle, while the long middle finger locks up and holds the circle together.

I think I get the concept now because I could not decide whether my middle finger or index finger should be inside the fan. I guess that means that I really have to stretch my ring and pinky fingers.

About the "splitting the sanada fan..." I mean performing the sanada fan, then dropping it, and producing another sanada fan from the same hand. Kind of like a split fan.

As far as "Splitting a Sanada Fan" is concerned, I've never seen it done that way and I have no idea how that would work.

Being that Sanada-san has published the 360 fan (albeit in Japanese), the move can certainly be assumed to be in the public domain. So I guess you are free to learn it, if you want.

I would suggest that you use the middle finger in the center hole of the fan. Also I think Sanada-san had told me that it might be easier to learn it by practicing with your palm up. Later when you get more control, then you can hold your hand upright.
