Hi Jeff,

Thank you so much taking time to be with us at the Café. I was wondering if you ever run into people who are afraid of you because of your "magical powers?" Not everybody loves magic and magicians. Have you ever had encounters with people who think you are "evil" or truly believe you have "super natural" powers from beyond?

Greetings Whitewolf, and all...

Yes, I do run into people that believe that I possess some sort of strange power. I handle these situations in a very delicate way. These days, I usually ask a potential participant if, in fact, they would enjoy experiencing some magic, before I launch into a performance.

Early in my career, I didn't even take this into consideration, and shook up a few unexpecting magic participants. Ask me about the Jamaican cab driver next time you see me, there's just no way to relate the experience through this medium.

I run into this situation less and less these days. I still tour the world quite extensively, and encounter a wide range of belief systems concerning what magic is, and whether or not it's a good thing, or an evil one.

My intention is not to change people's minds or opinions about magic, but to utilize magic as a tool for storytelling, to connect people and to open their minds to new possibilities.

Sometimes, magic can be a dangerous profession, if you enter into this territory of clashing belief systems.
Here is one of my favorite quotes:
"The profession of magician, is one of the most perilous and arduous specializations of the imagination. On the one hand there is the hostility of God and the police to be guarded against; on the other it is as difficult as music, as deep as poetry, as ingenious as stage-craft, as nervous as the manufacture of high explosives….”
– William Bolitho 1890-1930, British Author
