It's difficult to have an intelligent discussion on such a volatile and emotional subject. There is after all no common ground on which to stand.
Since one cannot logically prove or disprove the existence on an entity called god every argument quickly devolves into emotional pleading and anecdotal evidence. This has been going on for millennium and it is extremely doubtful that it will be resolved here on an internet chat board. The theists and atheists have been running around in circles for years over a CARM. the fundies post the same old tired arguments and the atheists counter with the equally old rebuttals. Every so often though we score a point for our side by deconverting one. Every so often we lose a point by having one of our side succumb and re-convert.

IMHO it's not the matter of religion which gets so divisive but the matter of needing other people to be wrong in their spiritual beliefs if they differ.
There's something dark that can happen to people when they imagine putting all that is good in one place on their mental model. The social implications of claiming and abusing an authority trump probably don't require discussion. Imagine a god that is so great that it can and does speak to people in ways that work for them rather than just the way that works for you.

Yes in a forum where we have members of all kinds, it is inevitable that some will let nagative emotions get in the way.
I am always willing to have a discussion (intelligent and civil). I have civil discussions everyday about it. My partner, she one who holds spiritual beliefs, whereas I do not. The beauty is we are able to see eye to eye on things no matter what we believe caused them....for example....if we met by chance or by destiny is not the point, that we met is all that matters. |

Well as a religious person (sorry if you are offended by it) I had to post this joke somewhere it was going to be read and appreciated and this seems to be the place.
Mom to kid: Go fetch the broom from the broom cabinet so I can clean the kitchen floor Kid: But....I am afraid because it is dark in there. Mom: Don't be afraid. Jesus is everywhere to look over you. Kid: OK Thanks mom. Kid goes to the broom closet opens the door a little and whispers inside "Jesus, please pass me the broom cause I am scared S$%tless to go in to the broom closet and mommy says you are in there" |

It should be possible to discuss 'spirituality', however, with no reference or egoic trauma over any particular religious practice. Mnay people are touched in a spiritual sense during a magic performance, as opposed to 'mentally' or 'emotionally'. Once could view that "tapping into the audience energy" is a spiritual attribute that can be trained and appreciated. Religion has nothing to do with it.
In our 'shrinking world' we should also be able to discuss how to prepare a routine for any particular audience. For example, if you were traveling to Turkey and wished to meet nagicians there, what types of effects would be appropriate? That discussion must relate to a knowledge of the various religions practiced there. Wearing white socks might get you into trouble -- who wants to perform "the wrong trick?"

Hmmm "nagative" ... I like it. Thanks.
Chessman - the way I work is to accept that whatever the other person has for a perspective is ecological for them and unless they are unhappy with something and want to change their perspective I will simply respect it as their view. It's usually more interesting for me to find out about what others have in their spiritual/personal perspective than to offer anything from my own - as I have no idea if what works for me would be ecological for them. For those who don't use that word - it means that what they have works for them in their environment and if altered might well put them out of sorts with the rest of their environment/work/family...
