I LOVE Flashback but there is no point in comparing the two as they are quite different. Apples and oranges...but both mighty tasty.
Different tests for different situations, events, demographics, crowd dynamics, ages, education level etc. Asside from fitting in your pocket and being adaptable to virtually ANY book or magazine, Diction is examinable while most others will only take a cursory glance. Diction can be left with the audience and even given as a gift. I offer refill Dictionaries. : ) In fact at this moment you could walk into any Borders book store in the USA, use their Webster's New World Dictionary, and it would work perfect. All the best, Kranzo

This trick is remarkedly similar to By Choice and by Chance Elmwood Magic 24.95. Is Paul Richards given any credits? It is a great trick and ideal for strolling. Something different from coins and cards.

Hey Guys!
So sorry if I forgot to post this. FINALLY got around to filming some live performances of DICTION. Here you go!! http://kranzomagic.myshopify.com/collect......n-kranzo Yes Paul too has a dictionary test and is credited in the manuscript. There is a similarity but I think you'll find it is also different. The idea that Paul uses is actually quite older than all of us and the history is all included. I think you'll find the additional subtleties quite appealing. All the best, Kranzo

This sounds really good but I'm worried about the comment regarding how the page number is reached. Is it the same page everytime? If a magician's force is used it needs to be a *** good one otherwise it's pointless IMO. Nothing worse than telling a spec they have a free choice only then to limit them by whatever means.
If this is not the case then I'll purchase it immediately as a portable book test is very appealing, especially a dictionary! |

No magicians force, different pages can be selected by the audience.
Don't tell them they have a free choice, have them tell YOU it was a free choice. |

The page number is chosen at random by one or more audience members; however, their choices are subtly limited but in a manner that they are unlikely to be aware of when properly presented (and as long as you do not repeat the effect for the same audience). If you need any further details, send me a PM.

I SOLD OUT of these over the weekend at the Winter Carnival of Magic.
I recently started doing the "Emotional Reaction" book test that is described as a prelude and the combination makes a fantastic routine. If you were at the lecture you got to see how it kills! All the best, Kranzo P.S. http://kranzomagic.myshopify.com/product......n-kranzo

Nathan,
Could you highlight what the differences are between Diction and Paul Richard's effect "by choice and by chance"? I have Paul's effect - and like it alot. Diction looks like the same method - just different patter of picking the page number. Can you go into the differences? It might be worth it to have both in order to repeat what appears to be the same effect to the audience.

Mark,
Yes, the two effects are very similar -- enough so that they could be used interchangeably. The only real differences (something I missed when I first reviewed "Diction") are the particular ranging force employed, the number of pages "in play" as a result and the details of the "certain something else" used. As neither uses anything either original or unique to itself, I don't feel that the similarities detract from or diminish either, nor IMO does it suggest that Nathan has copied or appropriated Richards' earlier (1994) effect. Thank you for bringing the similarity to my attention.

Paul Richards is a friend of mine and we have discussed our tests and the similarities/differences.
Dick as always thanks so much for your honest reviews and accurate history! : ) One nice thing about Diction is the Dictionary itself is of a much higher quality. Also the spectator has a choice of more than ONE word per page. There are a few other subtleties that I think make Diction a little more user friendly. OF course I'm biased. If you asked Paul he might say the opposite. Also I'd like to mention that I really look at Diction as either a quick direct effect, or a piece of a longer routine. This is why I teach a very strong impromptu test that can be used to proceed Diction. They build on each other. This too I thinks at great value to this product. I could list other things but I don't wan't to tip everything here. : ) All the best, Kranzo

My comparison of "Diction" and "By Choice and By Chance" was in response to a specific question and I hope that no one construed it as a criticism of "Diction" (I know that Nathan didn't see it as such). Both are fine effects, but are designed for use in different situations. "Diction" is clearly designed with walk-around or impromptu situations in mind while I think that Paul was focused more on a platform/stage presentation.

Diction is a great, fun, and easy to do. I have another book test that requires me to be near it which does not feel right when Diction there is no reason to be near it which makes it so much better.
I have paid lots of $$$ for magic that ended up in the box covered in dust, but Diction was one of the best investments that I have made. Thanks Nathan, Keith |

I love Diction a lot, but I have a question to ask.
If I walk up to someone and just hand out the dictionary and show them what I can do I feel like I am just doing a "TRICK" and not magic. How do I make it look as I am doing something magical? I feel stupid for asking this question, but it's something had to ask. Thanks for those take the time to answer this question Keith |
