Hi
I was at a music store the other day, looking for violin rosin. They had light and dark rosin. Which would be best for coin work?
Thanks
Ralph

The last rosin I got was light and I was thinking it was not working as well. However that could have been my imagination. It seemed to be a bit more powdery, a little less sticky and it did not seem to last as long on the coins.....again could be my imagination.

Abe,

If I may, let me suggest 2 things.... 1) Use sparingly (apply lightly around edge). 2) It's meant to be an aid, don't let it become a crutch!

You can buy stuff that works particularly well from David Roth. He buys the resign and repackages it for coin workers. It might cost a little more, but at least you don't have to go searching for what will work.

Thanx for the tip Mickey.. I spent some time last night searching for local music shops and I'll give a couple of them a call to see if they carry any. although it looks like most of the shops in my area are guitar shops.. I did get a lot of hits on Amazon.com though might just order from there.

yeah I know its only an aid, I can palm halves and dollars pretty well but the dollars currently have no milling since I got them on ebay and are pretty worn .. will have to send them off later to get some work on em by Lassen.

mfeld I did read that Mr. Roth sold his own rosin for about 20 dollars, I think there is like only one place online that you can get it.

Roth's Rosin $21.50 from Hank Lee's...music store violin rosin $2.99 a block. I know that David did the leg work and repackaged an already existing product, but WOW! Not wanting to besmirch David...but WOW!

Well from what I have been seeing on prices for rosin online, depending on the brand of rosin you want the price ranges anywhere from 2 to 16 dollars.. so I don't know if the mark up from Mr. Roth's rosin is that much more, I mean if after years of trying all kinds of rosin the one he found works best was one of the more expensive one rather than the 2 dollar ones.

for now though, I'm just looking to try it out so a cake of 2 dollar rosin will be enough for me atm. but who knows, maybe in the future I'll try the Roth Rosin.

How does that old country song go? "If your gonna play in Texas you've got to have a fiddle in the band." You'd think any music shop in Texas would carry violin rosin...that is if fiddle players use it too.

Seems I recall finding rosin at "Guitar Center" which I'm pretty sure any larger Texas city has!

Fiddle players argue about light and dark rosin, too.

Stanyon, David Roth went through years of trial and error until he found the right rosin that worked best for him. And, for years he talked about it at his lectures, but surprisingly, few people actually went to the trouble of buying it. The reason that this post exists is because David is the one who re-discovered it's use, and shared his knowledge. Finally, he began to offer it to people at his lectures. You are paying for the convenience of getting the exact one that David himself uses, and for the convenience of getting it without having to go all over to find the right type yourself. I'm sure there are a bunch of magic products that you can find on your own at a much lower price if you take the time to look for it, but you pay a higher price for the luxury of getting it conveniently at the magic store, or your dealer, or from the Lecturer who finds it, packages it, and carries it around with him while he/she tours, so you can get it easily. And the fact thaqt David sells a good amount of these, shows the interest in the magicians who make the purchase. It is available through David on his website as well.

Dr. Rubinstein -

Probably the reason for my reaction. I DO take the time to research and seek out that which will serve me best, but considering that a little goes a long way David's product could have heirloom potential. (And I did buy my lifetime supply of rosin for $2.99 at a music supplier.)

Cheers! Smile

There's another product sold in music stores called "Gorilla Snot" that drummers use for that extra grip on drum sticks as do guitar players for some tack on their picks! It's a gooey rosin type product that a VERY SMALL amount goes a longggggggg way!

I used this for a short time when first learning to Classic Palm and when I say a small amount I'm talking a smidgen the size of a BB rubbed into you hand! Even that much may be too much! LOL

Mickey,
I am a drummer and at one time used Gorilla Snot but switched to bow string wax (not as messy and still a good gripping aid). It's been a while and never dawned on me to use it for coin work. Thanks. Time to make a trip to the Drum Pad.

Hey Jack,

My youngest is a drummer and I think it was one of his early teachers that told me about it! Hope you find it beneficial!
