Hey guys. I hope I can offer some insight here. I played Violin for 10 years. As far as "premium" rosin goes, I found nothing beats Jade. You can see it on the link posted above. And like everyone else said, don't grind it on. Use it lightly. A very small amount goes a long ways. In the ten years I played, I bought Jade after the 7th year or so and I never had to buy another one because it lasted so long.
If you guys have any questions about them, I'm glad to help. |

VIOLINIST ALERT!
Premium Violin rosin, does NOT equal premium coin rosin. If GRIP is what you're after look into Viola, Cello, or Bass rosin. (The lower you go, the stickier it gets). Some of the absolute best violin rosin you can buy is Tartini, (I used to swear by Jade, Tartini blows it out of the water!) but it is overkill for coin work! Get a block of cheap-o rosin. Light/Dark, whatever, it doesn't matter. Find something cheap that works, they all grip the same as far as coins are concerned. They even have allergen-free rosin if you need. Buying premium "magic" rosin, is like buying a 15 dollar small can of roughing spray, vs a huge 3$ can of krylon. Same stuff. If you're using coins worth over $10,000, then consider fancy rosin for them. |

I wasn't necessarily saying that Jade is the best for coins, as I've never tried it. I was only saying it's the best rosin I ever found. Either way, if the cheaper stuff is stickier and that's what's helping most... then by all means get that instead! I still haven't tried it, but I don't know if I could stand the feeling of rosin on my skin. I usually prefer my hands and coins clean... the feel is much better. |

Hear Hear Double O! I too am a Violist. Though there is a special place in my heart for Violin, as I played that for almost 15 years. Everything that has been said here is pretty accurate. However I will say I WONT pay 22 bucks for rosin for coin work. I didn't pay it for Violin or Viola work for that matter. But that's me

Ever think of bowling little bag of rosin powder. I used it from time to time. Excellent!

How does the rosin fare on a coin nested under a shell? Does it cause the coin to stick? That would be a deal breaker for me. I wouldn't want to carry two sets of coins to overcome this problem. Is this better reserved for coins used without gaffs, possibly slicked halves since they have very little milling left as it is.
All small town magicians know what 793.8 signifies.

I use this one I purchased at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Original-RDM-Stude......7&sr=1-7
$1.95 + $4.00 shipping. I spend plenty on other magic supplies, books, DVDs, etc.; I can't afford to pay 10 times this for rosin from a magic store. Jim |

IMHO. I am disappointed to find Dr. Rubenstein supporting David Roth's product. Like anyone I am a huge fan of David’s talent and work and he can charge whatever he likes for his effects. But $20 for a tiny block of Rosin is insulting. By the way, $20 is not a fortune to most adults and I purchased a block before I knew any better but it’s the principle and I honestly feel that this level of mark-up is taking advantage.

Hey Xcath, I'm not sure if there's a difference in the rosin they are using... but good rosin for an instrument can cost double that price and is very fine. Not sure if it makes a difference on the hands or not though, I've never used rosin in that fashion.

Xcath1 - David has been talking about Rosin for years. He discovered this great information, and gave EVERYONE the heads up. But, as you well know, many people attended those lectures, and not many people went to actually find rosin, much less the one that David recommended. So realizing this, David went out of his way to find a supplier, and make up his own label. He now provides this at his lectures, and people line up to buy it, even though David still explains what is is. No one is putting a gun to their head, David is providing a service. It certainly is easier to find it,especially with the internet, but I guarantee you, people are reading this as we type, and will not do a search to get it. But if they go see David, and the stuff is there, they will get it. And remember,David has been talking about this to people all over the world for YEARS, and you wouldn't know about it, and we wouldn't be having this discussion, if it wasn't for David going the extra mile, talking about it AND selling it.
One other thing I gotta say- when you go see a magician at a lecture, you should realize that this is the way they make a living. The magician has to pay usually for the expense of getting to a lecture, and usually is compensated by a fee for the lecture (not huge, considering the time away from home) and a hotel for the night. That lecturer sells product (notes, tricks) to basically earn a living. If he is on a tour, he has to develop product, find the product, construct the product, and carry it around with him, hoping he didn't take too much, or too little. He makes an investment of time and money, in order to provide you with the material at the lecture. He hopes you will appreciate it enough to make a purchase. So, when a magician comes to your area, and gives a great lecture, and provides material that will be helpful to you, even if it costs a bit more, I think you should be supportive. You can find any commercial product for a bit less if you look around long enough, or make the thing up by yourself. Or, you can support the guys who took the time to find, develop, and refine, so they can continue to do what they do best, teach their material to interested magicians.

Actually Michael ,
I agree with what you said...I bought some Roth rosin when you were both here in blackpool and if it had not been for David I would probably not known about it unless I came across a thread on here.. By the way I did purchase quite a few blocks from a European supplier that was cheap..But like I say it was David that steered me to search for a cheaper alternative after I bought his.So as you say it at least gives anyone an idea what to use and I don't begrudge paying what I paid at blackpool.
If you put the time in....you will achieve ...

Who would have even thought of rosin.
Rosin is the only way to go as far as I am concerned. Magic is a small cottage industry. I personally reward David for his ingenious research by purchasing Roth rosin. It is better than anything I tried. |

What is the best way to implement the rosin in coin work? For example, if the rosin has been used on a violin bow it becomes somewhat a powder. I have used rosin on the Golden Shells by rubbing the shells into the rosin to provide myself "grip."
Any recommendations on applying the rosin to coin work?

Just rub the milled edge of your coin on the rosin block all the way around the coin. Don't "cake" it on, it just takes a very small amount. As said earlier, it's an aid in coin work.
