One of the reasons I would tell my clients I don't use a rabbit in my show, is because the rabbit might become rabid.

Everyone is entitled to their own perspective. I wasn't aware Silly Billy used live animals in his shows. Disappointing but I still have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a children's performer.
Personally I agree with Jozo Bozo who emphatically states on his website that he does not use live animals because he believes it to be cruel. |

To answer the original question, my answer would be nothing. The magician with a rabbit is what audiences expect. It's just like peanut butter and jelly, ying and yang, Bonnie and Clyde, ect.
If I asked 1000 people to finish this sentence... The magician then reached into his hat and pulled out a ___________________! 997 will say rabbit, 2 will say a magic wand, 1 will say a beer. As far as right or wrong to even have an animal is a personal choice. I use puppets personally because they are easier to care for and feed and take to the vet. |

There is no right answer to this question. I am the star of my show, and I will not be upstaged by a gimmick. My main products are TALENT, and HUMOR. Welcome back Mr. Bill

I do not ever feel that I am being 'upstaged' by my rabbit, but people love him. I do not always use a rabbit, and I feel perfectly comfortable with that also. I have a lot of strong routines, and my rabbit production routines are additonal strong routines. All my routines are just a part of my show....I can drop any of them, make substitutions, and still have a strong show. Using a rabbit does not make or break my show. As it has been said, many people do associate magicians with rabbits, and some do expect and insist upon it.
It does get to me when I hear soem of those that do not use rabbits trying to put down those of us that do. Saying that using animals is cruel is not right, and even irresponsible, IMO. I really think it makes it appear as if magicians are somehow abusing the animals they use, and I think it is a bad incinuation used by some who need an excuse for not having a rabbit in their show. I have no problems with those who choose not to use a rabbit, or any animal for that matter. In fact, I prefer it to be that way. I like to be as different as possible. I'm not going to put someone down for not havoing animals in their show. There are plenty of legitimate reasons for not using animals that clients can understand and appreciate without placing another mark against magicians, and magic in general. I know there are cases where magicians may not treat their animals so nicely, but that goes for many pet owners as well. Should we say, "I don't own a pet because it is cruel"? I treat my animals with love and respect, and give them lots of care. I develop a special bond with my working partners, and I dare say that the majority of magicians do the same. I feel my animals are in as good a situation as they could be in. Like Ken, I do not plan on changing my rabbit routines any time soon. Regan

Thanks guys but I think some of you are taking the original question to literal.
I do not care if if it is a rabbit. This is about any live animal production. What effects when seen evoke the same VERBAL ooh and AHH as when a bird, bunny or snake appears? Sorry but RINGS do not cut it, Sponges do not cut it. Color book, a good 5-way gets some but not really the full audience WOW. Snowstorm of China, yes, that will do it. Those who said Candy are correct as well, but not if they are not allowed to have some. What are some WOW effects that say "talented magician" but do not require a live animal. I have in the past used an honest answer of why I do not use live amimals. Most magic props are not amimal friendly in the heat or extreme cold. Most understand this. You guys have to know that there PLENTY of second rate entertainers who do NOT care for their animals as any more than a prop. SOme people use rabbits as food, some use them to feed big snakes. To some they are just what they are, from the Rodent family. Do not debate this, this is the truth. They have no concern about putting a dwarf in a dove pan for 20 mintues on a 90 degree day. The topic really is, what are the other WOW factor effects if you have mostly great middles. BTW I have a spring skunk and Axtell bird in the show. Kids LOVE it but even young ones sense the bird or skunk is not real. They might ask me if it was real but they are not WOWED by puppets. Entertained yet but do not comment verbally in the WOW or OOHH AHHH fashion. I am talking SFX and effect with that OH MY how did he do that type reaction that it seems just plopping a rabbit on a table creates. As someone stated, maybe NOTHING would beat it, but then what comes in the close second. |

Most magicians I have ever come across seem to really love their animals. I have other pets myself, but I have a real close bond with my stage partners. I take extra special care of them and I do not ever put them in a situation that would harm them. As I said, I do not, or will not use animals in all my shows. The main reason I sometimes refuse to use them is if it is an outdoor show where the heat or other safety issues might be a concern. Magicians such as the ones you described above should not use animals, but I realize they are some of that type out there. There are many pet owners that should never own a pet as well. However, just saying that using animals in magic shows is cruel is both untrue and unfair. Like I said, I think it is an excuse used by some to try and justify to their clients why they do not use rabbits/animals. When it is used I believe it is a discredit to magicians and magic in general.

Sponge balls, rings, birds, coloring books, or bunnies are just taking the easy way out. Try ORIGINALITY, I know it requires thought but what the heck. It will only make you THE STAR OF YOUR SHOW

In Kuwait (where it is over 49 degrees CELSIUS today at an outdoor party) I closed with a dove pan full of sweets. A short show, then everyone went back in the pool. My alternative show uses David Ginn's Snake Can Routine.
In Cambodia I also use the dove pan / sweet routine. It's too hot for anything else. It's too hot for a real animal. In fact my laptop stopped working, and the PA barely made it through. I like to end on a production, often using the birthday child. In the UK I've got the Bingley Brothers Circus for a production of a live animal.
Have wand will travel! Performing children's magic in the UK for Winter 2014 and Spring 2015.

A straitjacket escape gets just a strong reaction...

A streight jacket escape requires more energy than the lazy magicians here are willing to do, but it is a perfect example of thinking outside of the box. It makes the kids cheer for you instead of cheering for your animals.

A birthday party straitjacket escape is easy - doing it 3-4 times a day in library/school shows is what's tiring! Yet it gets a GREAT response!
Go on Al, try it... |

I'm recovering from open heart surgery right now, but I promise to learn it next year for those Summer festivals. It should go well with my audience participation flaming torch juggling finish.

Hey Al. Its nice to see you back to yourself again. I understand what you’re saying, but I think it takes just as much talent to know when to take a step back and let others be the star. I don’t mind being the straight man in certain circumstances. My ego can take it. It’s the overall experience that one gets by watching my show that matters to me. The warm fuzzy feeling my audience gets from seeing a rabbit appear will give them a warm fuzzy feeling about me and my show by way of association.
Other examples are when you’re working with the birthday child or you have a really funny volunteer helping. Let them ham it up and make everyone laugh. Everyone will still go home saying, “Wasn’t that a great show?” Quote:

Hi Ken
If wanting the bunny to be the star is what you prefer then It's ok with me. I'm a big ham, and I want all the praise, so it's one bunny, and one not bunny. Good to talk to you again Ken.

Glad to hear you came out alright and are recovering Al! Speaking of hearts, a friend of mine was watching a video clip of me escaping and his little girl mentioned that my face was really red - he suggested I take a defibrillator to my shows - just in case.
My heart won't mess up from the escape - it will be all the fast food I eat while on the road! |
