Good advice James. I wouldn't want to tax anyone's interest.

It is also a question of engagement. An audience member that is actually playing the game (or believes they are) will respond with a different level of interest and will focus primarily on winning the game, whereas the guest who is passively watching a magician push the shells around (finishing with a "magical" conclusion) simply dismisses it as "a trick" which lacks the conflict necessary for a human drama... When you've got a stake in the game you play it to win - if you're simply watching, you guess (and respond not to where you think/know the pea is, but rather where you "think" the "magician" will put it). The difference in approach yields startlingly different responses and levels of involvement.
That is why I prefer to play (and I don't use this term lightly) with three individuals: one who provides the stake and two who compete against each other. I serve as the catalyst, but the real drama occurs around the three players. If anything, I serve in the role of Greek chorus that comments on the action and provides a thoughtful (and hopefully satisfying) conclusion that resonates with audiences for years after. My conclusion brings us back together as a group and provides a bookend to the con... ajp |

If a performer can make final loads play and work and the audience enjoys it I would say - go for it. However for me I like loads to be in tricks like the cups and balls and the chop cup.
I do think that some shell routines I have seen over the years fall flat at the end. And in my opinion the trick does need a good strong climax. Here is how I like to do it. http://www.mrhypnotist.org/video/shellgameglennbishops.wmv Just a few thoughts and opinion. Cheers!

Whoops! I wandered in here searching for some thing else. But since I like magic and often (respectfully) disagree with Whit...
I think it would be funny to ask the spectators if they'd like to know how it's done. Then state "I use more than one pea", lifting each shell, full to capacity, with hard peas. ...But of course that would ruin everything. I should be ashamed for even thinking it.

New to the 3 shell game, IMO the magic is already there. Because your mark/spectator has already lost track of a tiny pea more than once(a feat he/she believes cannot possibly happen)
therefore he has consigned himself to the two possible outcomes that the hand is quicker than the eye(a skilled con-man) or there is some sort of hanky panky going on(magician). So to that end I think a final load would detract from the effect.Let the question in their mind do the work for you. Definition of MAGIC from Websters Dictionary Online 1a : the use of means (as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces b : magic rites or incantations 2a : an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source b : something that seems to cast a spell : enchantment 3: the art of producing illusions by sleight of hand |

My feeling is that if you are doing an exhibition routine and the audience is not directly involved in finding the pea, you are, in the spectator's mind, doing a magic trick .... no matter what kind of a story you tell to disguise it. All that you are saying is 'look, I can make the pea jump from here to there, and you can't tell me how I do it' In order for the shells to be a true gambling routine, the spectator has to have some degree of risk. They have to feel as if the onus to follow the pea is on them. If doing a magic routine it is perfectly viable to use a final load, a solid shell, or a color changing elephant. It just doesn't matter. It will always be remembered as a magic trick.
