I don't smoke & don't promote it. However if I DID smoke I might want to do Cellini's cigarette manipulation; it kills!

That's what I call old school. I teach magic at a grade school (after school) and kids ask why is there cigarette magic in our magic library ? I say in ancient times many people smoked in restaurants and homes

I've never heard of someone being able to muscle pass a cigarette. I have seen several toss a cigarette into the mouth, and I actually have a way to "shoot" it from the fingers into the mouth, but not a muscle pass, I am curious to know the answer to this as well...

Steve Fearsons Floating Cigarette is by far one of the most powerful pieces of cigarette magic. As a magician I have been performing this for over 10 years! It's so elegant and classy that I'm sure most magicians who perform with IT will agree. It is worth the practice and I can vouch first hand that I got many shows booked because of this one piece of magic. It's also very simple and visual for the spectator.
Steve Also came out with a DVD called "the Master Levitation System" Which is the most detailed instructions I have ever seen on the subject. Magicians who have seen this have also mentioned to me that it caused them to start thinking and adapting the method to other practical uses. Hope this help. There are many fine slights and effect designed for cigarettes and it seems a waste to let them die. I remember some wonder performances abnck when I was a kid. So, here is a possibility ...
start with a slender wnd, white with balck tips. Explain what a "broken wand" ceremony is and that you want to pay tribute to some famouns magciains of yesteryear. Break off the tips and then the wand into pieces -- about 3" long. You can now do a 30 minute routine and never mention cigarettes once. Even holding a piece in your teeth can be justified by not having enough hands for all of the productions.

Cigarette magic is great, but as it is becoming less and less cool these days, it is hard to know whether or not spectator will be turned off from the start. Every magician has their staple material and magic that not only they feel very comfortable doing, but it is performed very well because they do it so many times. I know for me one of my all time favorite pieces of magic is Fearson's floating cigarette. It is by far the best trick involving cigarettes. I have been doing it for nearly 10 years, and it has become second nature by now. Consider this and people will remember you for a long time!

I agree that Fearson's Floating Cig is by far the most powerful cig routine you can do. Also, Slydidni's torn and restored is great, and is impromtu as well.

'Infinitum' by Tenyo is worth considering. A cigarette effect that punches above it's weight. No sleight of hand involved as the specially designed locking case does all the work.Case can be fully examined afterwards.

Check out Cyril Takayama's cigarette manipulation on youtube. It really is a delight to watch.
Fearson's floating cig is also very visual. |

If you can find a copy Supreme Magic released a video featuring David Berglas' cigarette production. Not watched it for ages but I seem to recall he shows his hand back and front before producing multiple cigarettes. The method was very clever and not that difficult.

You could use certain candies, smarties in the roll-fun around halloween, candy cigarettes(though they're likely to break) pocky, pretzels, what have you, and then you don't have to worry about the social ramifications. Or you can just do what your going to do with a smile and don't cater to someone who would rob you your freedom of choice.
The quit smoking routine by David Stone goes over quite well(its what I usually do) mainly because you can do it indoors, and doing so is pretty funny because people will point to no smoking signs, or tell me there's no smoking at which point I say "well of course there's no smoking, not unless you really want to." and then launch into my patter about having to quit and whatnot. One tip I can tell you is to invest in fake paper cigarettes, a john rogers wooden(bonus points for the gaffs), or make your own out of pens or wood and recycled filters. because a lot of the slights, if your not careful, will rough up an actual cigarette. even if you prefer to use real ones for actual performances- you will save so much money by using the fakes for practice. |
