Hi sleevers out there, a technical question:
i perform with long jacket sleeve busking nearly surrounded. Noticed that despite misdirection, people who tried hard to catch me instead of following the story would be able to see me sleeving the ball from the side. Looking myself in the mirror from the SIDE I can also see the flash of the ball. Is sleeving objects bigger than coin to be relegated to stage only ? Any advice ? thanks |

Jeffery Wang has incredible sleeving technique, you can see it on his Penn and Teller Fool Us spot, and it is taught on his Penguin Live lecture download.

In this very case I m performing the Walrus 3 balls routine (1 in the pocket, 3 in hands), the misdirection is my body position (left hand going up and front, head turning towards left hand, as the left hand opens and reveal there are still 3 balls). the sleeving happens with the right hand that was hanging down and raise up to scratch my chin or point to the public or other motivated movement). People that catch me are always the ones located on my right side. I do not want to use a spec as assistant to cover my right angle as it is a solo "personnality" part of my act. if I record me from the right side I can spot a flash |

Hey Dr. I perform largely on the streets also.
I have found that if you propel the object such as a coin (E.M. Roberts)...works great, absolutely no flash to anyone surrounded. However sleeving larger objects such as a golf ball, jumbo coin... by lifting the hand & dropping....there's very likely a flash for someone around you. The only way around is to have larger & longer sleeves....which IMHO looks bad & more obvious. So it seems we're both experiencing it the same. |

It's my go to method to "prime the pump" for my Miser's Dream routine. Although I suppose you'd call this method "reverse sleeving" or something. I dunno...

Hey, I rather like the EM Robert’s method myself, and have played with s***ving for some time now. I don’t get a chance to do it a lot much these days, but still love the art of it. Never did it much with balls, but with coins it always seemed to me that the misdirection was sorta built right into going into the action of it. I’ve never had anyone catch me using it, and I’ve used various methods of doing it. I still remember my days with Silver Dream fondly. But it sounds from the immediate question that misdirection is certainly at the core of the challenges here. Some good responses so far.

Ball appears in bottom LH that starts to rise, while RH drops and relax along body. I open my LH to show the ball between thumb and inder, meanwhile the RH raise and sleeve and mirror the LH (though empty) B: 2 in hands 1 in pocket phase. RH put the "3rd" in my pocket, remove it. call attention on the LH that moves forward. As LH opens, RH goes up and s****e the ball then moves to pick up and display the balls from LH |

Anyone interested in sleeving should also see Rocco's Penguin live and at the Table Live. He masterfully often gets one object, palming another hidden one, and sleeves the hidden object so that he can make a very clean production after clearly showing that only the object he just visibly showed is in his hands.

Many years ago I attended a lecture by David Berglas in which he demonstrated his sleeving technique. It was about the most magical thing that I had ever seen. There's a whole chapter on it in Ganson's The Art of Close-Up vol. 2.

I use sleeving for coins and cards. I also combine sleeving with a topit, makes my magic more magical.
