I just have to share this one with you guys!

So I was doing some card magic for my mom today. Nothing special bla bla bla... She was begging me for one last trick before I had to go. So I thought I'd mess around a little bit...

This get's better bear with me people!

I shuffle the deck randomly, I mean it, totally random! Then I say "think of a card" "you got it?" "pick up the top card of the deck". She picks it up and her jaw drop's "How did you do that??!!" she yell's out (I haven't seen what card she picked, and was as much suprised as she was at that point)

Anyway, the card that was at the top was the lucky ace of spades LOL.

Just wanted to share this as a totaly random coincidence which blew me and my mom away! (I acted like that was supposed to happen)

I mean what are the odd's of the card being randomly shuffled, getting to the top, and that card being the card the person was thinking of? I know the ace of spades is so common, but meh, I still think it's crazy!

These impossible random coincidence seldom occur and when it happens ... enjoy that moment and especially from the look of the audience.

Oh man, that's great, I'm sure something like that happens to people once in a while. Like the Father just said, just take the bow and act like it was part of the trick. What were you going to do, anyway?

This is a very powerful experience.
Something similar happened to me the other day. I was planning on doing some magic for a friend of mine. While I waited for her, I decided to take a particular card (Jack of Hearts) out of the deck and put it into my pocket. Later that day I tried to make her think of a card (originally I planned it as a funny moment; probably like cmdash24 did) and she said "Jack of Hearts". I let her took out the card and she was speechless.

I have experienced the different coincidence - I was doing a show for adult and I have chosen one elderly man, who was nicely smiling at me, I took him on the stage and I was doing a trick and he should do the same as me, of course normally the spectator wouldn't be able to do it but he to my surprise succeeded. I was really shocked but in the end he turned out to be a MAGICIAN, which was very entertaining

Occasionally after putting on a show you will get a comment on a 'favorite trick' that you never did! The audience, or a single spectator observed something in tghe flow of things that seemed magical. We must alwsy learn from what the audience sees (perceptions) as opposed to what we as magicians 'see'. Whether the observed result is deliberate or accidental, you are the causitive agent and should rightfully take credit for it -- another reason not to share secrets ;-)

The ace of spades. That is probably my favorite card.

When I tell a person to think of a card, and proceed with saying "exept the ace of spades" A lot of times people are blown away - "That was exactly what I was thinking! How did you know it was the ace of spades?!"

That just cracks me up!

Yeah, had that same thing occur to me a few weeks ago.
"OH COME on, do ONE more!"
- "meh.. think of a card."
"Okay."
- "7 of spades."
"WHA- HOW.. AAH!"

Most favorite moment since I started doing magic Smile

Not to be a stickler and not that I'm a math genius (I think that BEN guy is) anyway wouldn't it be different odds.

Assuming a 52 card deck with no jokers:

The probability AofS is on top is 1 in 51, then the probability of his mother picking it is also 1 in 51. The probability of those happening together is 1 in 2601

So that is actually a really good trick.

So as not to be ranted back at I responded to this because I just saw "The Brothers Bloom" and the one character did a similar trick stating if it would ever work it would be the greatest trick ever. So congratulations on pulling off the greatest trick ever. Also feel free to correct my math if it is wrong.

Sorry to say, but no, the probability IS 1 of 52, i. e. 1.9%. The card was not named, but happened to be the one on top. This is a difference!

If cmdash24 had first said "Your card is the ace of spades", then chances were 1/52. If then the ace would be the top card it were 1/(52*52).

You should ALWAYS be aware of this (nearly) 2% chance of getting lucky on a random card choice. If you play it well, it will blow your audience's mind!

Believe it or not, I actually flubbed the old 'coin behind your ear' trick once with a kid. I dropped the coin and it fell into his shirt pocket. Fortunately, I saw where it went. Instead of panicking, I ad-libbed something along the lines of, "Huh. I wonder where that quarter is? Why don't you check your pockets?" Not only was the kid amazed when he found it in his shirt pocket, so were his parents! They would have just smiled politely if I had found the coin behind his ear as planned. But this happy accident really impressed them.

So be prepared to play the odds, and always have an 'out' in case you screw up. SmileO
