If you want to pull it apart Joshua, we're using customized red5 installation with a bespoke mp4 streaming engine, this isn't secret, it'll be obvious to any savvy individual with a telnet client, this is streaming technology, consequently doesn't allow a flv/mp4 to buffer on a client machine, buffering is tightly controlled on the server and no backwards/forwards caching is present, its the same as watching a live broadcast, it is delivered from the server as a live stream.
The server won't begin to broadcast to the player until it is authenticated, and maintains constant contact with the server, else the stream stops being broadcast. We also utilize visually invisible and inaudible smart watermarks on the video and audio that is individual to each user, so should video become available anywhere via screencap or other recording technology they would have to either substantially degrade the quality of the video and audio to mask the watermark or risk giving away their identity, we will of course maintain a monitor on the usual sharing sources for our titles. This is groundbreaking technology and not something we've seen available anywhere else, we have the benefit of having a relatively niche market, so can cater for it well rather than trying to make something that could handle many millions of simultaneous connections we can concentrate on just providing up to 200,000. You'll note similar technology being used by the movie studios to track which cinemas are getting the most people with tall hats with cameras in them at. But the big thing to hold in mind here is that this platform is not just for the content, we don't think many users would risk membership and legal action by distributing media when they are receiving many other on-site services. I'd draw your attention to systems like iTunes, since day 1 of launch someone published a quick easy app that would remove the DRM from the audio and make it untraceable to the purchaser, the purchaser could then share it with whomever they please. Despite this iTunes is still the defacto source of audio and video and now apps. This isn't because its impossible to steal the content, or because its impossible to find it somewhere else but because of the ease of use of the system. I trust this reassures you to our technical team's competence |

I have to say very nice tom. =) sorry if I sounded "nasty" or rude. I'm sure you understand you have big claims (and have backed them up) but others have also made such claims so I hope you understand the skepticism all around. It sounds like you have put quiet a investment in this.
I'm not sure if this has been answered but is this a subscription service or only pay per use. |

Same as watching a live broadcast? The last time I checked I could pause, fastforward, rewind and record a live broadcast with the touch of a button. Maybe not the best analogy there.
But wow... Paramount, MGM, Fox, and countless others have been pouring Millions of dollars into research to prevent piracy, And after all the time and money they spent, It just took a couple of guys to come up with the solution. And what did they do when they figured it out? They decided to open an "online magic video rental service" of course!! Visual watermarks and secure streaming video and little elves that spring from your telephone receiver and hack at your fingers with tiny carving knives if you try to save, copy, or otherwise pirate that which is not yours to do so with. Amazing! Simply amazing.. Of course you realize that visual and audible watermarks (I'm not seeing this BTW) won't matter to those who simply want to keep the video for themselves? Not to mention the fact that you would have to download any files that pop up on the internet yourselves just so that you can watch the video and analize it only to hope that you can see or hear what your looking for? If I were you guys I'd give up on the whole magic rental thing and go straight to the big companys. You'll make a heck of a lot more selling this "groundbreaking" tech. to them. V.

Maybe I have got this wrong but if the worry is that people will copy these videos somehow some way, they would still have to pay (rent) to actually see the video they want to copy in the first place so that would put them off for a start. The people who generally copy stuff are the ones who don't want to pay anything at all no matter how little, so they will go elsewhere - the torrent sites.
This would leave only the genuine subscribers who want to learn via this new method. If this is true, then the Academy need not worry.

Not really angelo,if you think about it someone had to obtain all of the pirate stuff on the net by some legal means i.e purchasing. The purchase was then uploaded.

I see what you are saying, but that is a minority right? Only a small handful would purchase whereas a lot more would share and download for free or wait until it comes out for free. Not many would make the first step to buy and then share to all. A lot more wanters than givers me thinks

Hey Voldemort, actually it took just one guy to figure it out, our lead developer, with a background of working with companies like 321 Studios on their dvdXcopy product line and DatMedia on their streaming platform he comes from a well versed background on piracy, copyright and streaming technology.
You'll note with your pause, fastforward, rewind live broadcast features, these are features in the player not in the broadcast. so you can do all those things on our system, but it sends instructions to the server to do so. so the player isn't actually doing the action itself. i.e. authentication. The technology we're using is inspired by the likes of iTrace, http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/techin......ks_x.htm theres many more in-depth articles on it, but that's the first one I found with google. What we're doing is groundbreaking for the online industry, its used today for cinemas. As I said in the last message we're a niche market which we can concentrate on well. its not a mass market offering persay so we can set reasonable scale limits on the system, limits that wouldn't be possible for a mainstream video on demand service and we can concentrate on providing that relatively small user group an exceptional service. This is all public knowledge stuff by the way, that will be documented on site. You make assumtions also V that we are not proffesional business people who have also considered and indeed have backgrounds in other industries... however, I will have to be blunt that that is our business and not yours. Mac, Angelo is correct - If someone where to record for personal use, these individuals are far less destructive to the community at large than one first imagines. and the stats actualy show that the majority of people that screen cap don't share. its the equivalent to someone recording a film in the cinema for their personal use, they had to pay to watch it in the first place, so there's a relatively low cost to the community by them watching it over and over. As I have mentioned previously - it's still much easier and more effective to buy a DVD to rip and as we can discover who it is that's stealing and uploading that is much more of a deterent than any other distribution chanel. Joshua, it is currently a free membership where you can purchase 'credits' as universal currency. I'm intrigued by your 'little elves' technology though Voldemort, have you considered offering a license agreement, please email me any literature you have to info@academyofmagic.com |

Sorry, the elf technology is based somewhere in Russia. Not my idea but one that I thought you may have considered. But I guess you had not heard of it. Well now you have and you can look into including it. It will fit very well with the other pieces of the fairy tale puzzle you are trying to piece together.
Credits huh... So the new era includes trying to emulate the Microsoft points system. Very neat. Just remember that for your "One guy" there are going to be forty times that many people that will try to figure out how to undo what he did. If for no other purpose THAN to undo it. They get-off doing stuff like that. To them its fun. Angelo, Do you think people are going to RENT an instructional DVD and only want to watch it once? Or for one day or whatever the Magicsoft credits get you? People will try to save these videos if for nothing else than the videos very nature. These are not movies. Anyway Tom, Have a blast. You should go far with the "Its our business, Screw what everyone else thinks (Including our customers) attitude. I take it your extensive background doesn't include any sort of retail service. V.

@ V: Again maybe I have misunderstood things but I presume the whole point is to be able to watch/rent only the aspects of a dvd you want to see or learn. Maybe there won't be many one trick dvds to rent. If say for example you want to research coin matrix effects then you can only watch the specific coin matrix effect from a dvd instead of having to watch all the dvd. This is because the dvds will be indexed by effects. Maybe there are quick learners out there that one viewing or two is enough.
Now my next comment is aimed at everyone in general now. It seems that there are many people eager to jinx, dismiss or be negative about all this. If things don't work too well, then the owners will have to sort it out but at the very least we can try encourage them for instigating something that has not been done before. It may benefit us. It may not. Only time will tell but we should not be so keen to kick the idea to the curb.

The chump that states "there isn't a hustler alive who can con me" always winds up as the mark. Similarly, folks who state "our video can't be ripped off" are the most likely to have their video ripped off (for reference, see ALL the big studios).
Video and audio which are presented to a customer to be viewed or listened to on their personal computer at home will always be able to be stolen by the clever pirate, to state otherwise may read cutting edge and revolutionary on an internet forum (especially when you don't have to back it up with anything), but in reality it comes off sounding exactly like the chump who states he can't be hustled. Statements like "can't be stolen" when spoken in terms of the internet seem to indicate a layman at the helm. BTW, rather than extend this thread to 5 pages, it seems it would have been in your best interest to not offer up comments that would keep it going. It will save you the snide comments if this doesn't work, and let you take your well deserved bows as the millionaires you'll all be if it does work. |

Wow - you guys - I'm feeling the love...
a quick note to each point without wanting to fuel this: credits where created because that's how our OD system works. you top up credits which buy time which to allow you to watch specific parts of any tutorial from the database. it wouldn't work any other way. (please see LeeHathaways last post) for those people focusing on rental you are missing the point somewhat (as Angelo touches on). the real service is the OD - giving members the chance of a really direct way of accessing what you require to learn - which I think is fare to say NOONE will be able to argue that the current way of learning through DVD tutorial is as effective as it could be. (that's not a chalenge btw folks!) the rental is merely a more cost effective way of being able to re-watch over a period wihtout repeatedly paying fot the same section. our USP is not rental but OD. silverking - please read above posts to understand the flaw to your point. I don't mean that in a facetious way by any means but I think we've well and truly covered that point. sorry. Quote:

The Mac...with the greatest of respect I think this particular comment is unfair. Whilst people on this and other forums don't always see eye to eye or have differing opinions about things, that is all good and that's what open discussion is for. But ultimately we are a group of human beings who share a common love and passion for a subject and to suggest that I've fabricated the facts to come out on top is not very gentlemanly. |

Pardon me, but I still do not comprehend this platform's benefit over something like Theory11's 1on1 - especially considering the fact that you cannot keep the content for later use.

Lee, returned with the greatest of respect,
Jamie D had insider information (read all his posts) and he even states its info he has been given. Later in the thread it is stated that his post was to get people talking about the academy. So he was obviously told this info by someone involved. If the information was in confidence then he would have been told NOT to post on it. He did post and continued posting without anyone from the academy asking him to stop. do you see my point? Best Mac. |

Hello all,
I have been away so I appologise that I haden't posted sooner. I'm surpirsed people are being so negative about this. I would have thought that someone trying to make a positive impact on the magic comunity and actually trying to find solutitons to magic piracy, magic archiving and making magic more accessable. As for my initial post, No, neither Lee nor Tom asked me to post on this. I was shown the site a little while ago in it's developing stages and just thought it was a brilliant idea. A way to get hold of magic when I need it. A brilliant resource for magicians around the world and I still belive it is a real revolution in Magic. I to this day still belive that it is a new era in Magic. Using the available technology to our advantage and sure there are flaws but the flaws massivly outway the positive things I can do for the magic industry. With time, more development and when the technology comes available, I have no doubt whatsoever that those flaws will dissapear. I do think it's a genuine shame that people don't view this in a more positive light for the things it can do for us as a comunity. all the best, Jamie Daws
