Hi everyone,
Anyone here who can recommend some good candle acts videos. I consider Lance Burton as the best candle manipulator. I do not know where the hell he steals the candles from in his rountines.

As far as candle magic is concerned I've always liked "Rico". I saw him on TV in the 1970s and it was a kind of like a standard dove act, except he replaced the dove productions with candle productions.
The pacing, music, timing was excellent and his technique was very clean. I don't know if he is in the business anymore and I don't know if there are any video copies of is act out there. But he is an act that always impressed me, very professional. Best regards, Levent http://www.LeventMagic.com

I'd just like to know what kind of clips he uses to hold the candles before producing them. The hair pin method is lame, flops around.

I will ask him, he used to use my utility clips. But hasn't ordered them in a couple of years.

(I forget which special it was, but I believe it's on the third (and last) DVD of the series.) As an aside, as a teen I put together a similar act using James Rainho's self-lighting candles and Fantasio vanishing candles. I even produced a large candle chandelier from a bundle of snap-out silks as a finale. I made the prop myself, using plans contained in a Mickey Hades book. Ultimately, the unpredictable and fragile nature of some the props (I lost count of the number of times I wound up producing an unlit candle) caused me to abandon the act after a few years. |

One of Fred Kaps' FISM winning acts included a running gag where lit candles kept appearing for no reason. Beautiful.

David wore the clip for months after the special. -- Mine has been sold for so long, all other are attempts at improving a "mouse traP" or match trap, when the best ain't broken.

The double is a new product and was requested by people who for some reason couldn't understand that if you want a second lit match during an act, duh, you use two match pulls.
Economically, it is cheaper to buy two of the "single match pulls" (as Burton uses 6), but someone has a double match pull selling for a lot of money, (and does not work any better), so I designed a double unit which is merely two side-by-side clips with a flatter but longer design. Works just as well as the singles. Now, since some magicians are new on the planet, they succumb to marketing and recommendations by those who swear by a competitors match pull only because A) they don't know about mine, and B) they listen to hyped ads. Since anyone can make a match pull, I decided long ago to keep my prices down, and give quality and value and have a simple device that a magician does not have to fabricate. Now, back to a double match pull. My design is two independent match devices side by side but slightly separate for safety reasons. The spring on the doubles are slightly stronger and have a good purpose if you do some of my match effects with it ie: Flaming coin production, & match to flower. Otherwise, pricewise and effectiveness, the single dependelite is equally as effective as my "Diablo double". Search engines on the net require that if I want to educate the public and compete with other exuberant manufacturers, that I must have a double match pull associated with my product line. Bottom line, more is not better. I still stand by the test of time. Thanks for asking. One last thing: I took the dependalite out of distribution so as to keep the price down. If I had to distribute the item thru magic supply houses, I couldn't afford to make them. Or, I would have to inflate the price in order to accommodate the "markup" of the magic business. Competitors of mine, place their product in the hands of the distributors and the consumer winds up paying for two additional markups. ie: if you want $5, your product has to sell thru shops for $10, or even $20. Cut out all the middle men, and I get $5 and the client gets a bargain and I don't have to protect the price (price-fix) for distributors.

Jeff Hobson uses a brilliant match pull - a matchbook that's folded over and tape is wrapped around it with a match loaded on the strip. He demonstrated making one at a lecture and it took him about eight seconds. He said in all his years on stage, the pull has only failed once - when it got wet and he didn't realize it. I'm a fan of anything I can make myself these days, and I've used Jeff's idea and produced a lit match every single time without fail. Same thing goes for body steals...a few pins and paper clips hold everything I need. Why buy it when I have the tools and resources lying around my house?

Fred Kaps, Ger Cooper, Silky Nagisa, Soni, Tim Star are all great acts with metal candles.
Regarding your question about Lance Burton`s candle holder I would first ask you what books by David Ginn or Fantasio himself do you have or have you read about Fantasio products? Lance`s holder holds 3 candles and it fits his act. You have to wear a scarf to make a steal. I think I said more than I should have. |

Magic by Candlelight by the Gustafsons.
BTW, it's Dick Gustafson, not Gustaphsen. Unless you're referring to a different person altogether that I've never heard of. Bill |
