I'm trying to come up with various ideas for getting an 18" caterpillar silk into a 6 foot butterfly silk. I would like to wrap the 18" caterpillar in a white silk for a cocoon, have it change to an 18" butterfly silk. Then, I'd like to have that grow into a 36" butterfly silk, and finally have that change into a 6 foot butterfly silk. I have several of the normal changing props: crystal silk cylinder, handled change bag, hidden spring change bag, dove pan, and more. I would like to end with the crystal silk cylinder (it's from Marty Hahn, good quality).
Any thoughts on this? Doug Follett |

A Mirror Tube might be a good choice for one of the changes. Insert a 36" butterfly silk, along with some silks of various colors, and produce a 72" butterfly.
Peter White at http://www.pasilks.com has a very nice one.

That could be a really beautiful "in-your-hands" sequence if you would just get rid of all the props and learn the sleights (and gimmicks) that make it possible to just transform one silk into another. It's mostly a matter of folding, concealing and revealing.
I suggest you start with the "Booth Blendo" (Rice Encyclopedia Volume 3, p. 1195) to transform your caterpillar and white cocoon silk into the 18 inch Butterfly. If that works well for you, use the same technique to transform the 18" butterfly into the 36" butterfly. By then you should be able to see your way clear to continuing on to the six foot butterfly, especially if you have an assistant to grab one corner of it for display. A six foot silk really needs an assistant to display it properly, and the assistant can then walk off with all the evidence of the prior transformations. Save your props for another time and make this an act of beauty as well as mystery.

The steps you are thinking of using for the transformation (wrapping the caterpillar in a white cocoon silk) are similar to the progression of the Wonder Imagery effect called Metamorphosis. I have been using this effect on my springtime and Easter shows for several years now. Tim Sonefelt created a beautiful transistion that is easy to perform and fools the audience every time. Google Wonder Imagery, and look under silk effects for this trick.

Thanks Mark. I've purchased several items from Tim in the past, and enjoy visiting his website. I've never clicked on Metamorphosis before however. I'll check it out.
Thanks again. Doug |

For last year's library "Bug" show I covered a repeat change bag in a material that made it look like a cocoon. It was great. The material had the texture of cotton candy and I spray glued it in pieces until it built up enough layers to actually look like a chrysalis. This also enabled me to invite the cutest little girl from the audience to pull the large butterfly silk out of the cocoon. The kid was always thrilled and it lent itself to injecting educational material into the fun of the production.

You can get a butterfly finger puppet that might help -- adding some animation with the final silk being a 'memory'

The Crystal Silk Cylinder is a priceless prop for butterfly (cocoon) magic. This is especially true when producing a larger than life string of butterfly silks at the end.
