Well as many may know, I have a love and passion for all of the manipulative arts. The ability to produce or vanish something from nothing always appealed to me. It just seemed so magical to me as a beginner of magic and still does.
So I have learned and studied many areas of manipulation but I must say that the ones I use most often are: - Cards - Billiard Balls - Flip Stick Now I also have and continue to work on new and original manipulative routines. I never just liked getting up there and doing something without it being an extension of myself. I also realized that showing "skill" alone was not enough for me. I wanted to take the "tools" of the manipulative arts and apply then in new and creative ways. This then creates something more enjoyable for an audience and pushes my own limits in the process. So what have I been working on? - A routine segment to my show that utilizes simplicity. Simplicity in music and in items I use. It is basically a short routine with a single billiard ball and combing it with a wand. The notion is sort of poetry of movement between the ball and the wand. It is combining ball moves with flip stick in such a way to create something fresh. It allows me to work on transitional moments when the ball transforms into the wand and vice versa. It allows for the white cap of the wand to be tossed and changed into the white ball. There are color change moments as well. Simplicity and movement and working with 2 unlike objects is my goal with this piece. - I am also working on a manipulation routine for children. Ok some of you may be shocked, but it can be done. The idea is to have there be a story and to change the objects around enough to have it make sense to the kids and a family crowd. The idea has taken me to the notion of manipulating lollipops. The ball at the top becomes a billiard ball and I do moves with it. The stick that the lolli was on now can be used and manipulated much like one would do cig moves with. It is essentially the same shape. The fun comes with the story I tell and the funny business that happens during the routine. The ball changes colors (flavors) and the stick vanishes only to be found back with the ball. Lots of byplay and fun as I work on this. Just some of what I am working on. Kyle

Kyle,
Both of those routines sound really good. You are obviously putting a lot of thought into it and that's great to see. I love the simplicity of your first routine. I am always battling the tendency to make things too complicated and cram too much variation in, so I can appreciate your desire to pare it down to just the bare bones. There is something beautiful in simplicity. Thanks for sharing. Best of luck, Bill |

Thanks Bill. Much appreciate that. I am always thinking outside of the box and coming up with different ways to approach common objects of magic. The first routine is based on the idea that I often overdo it. So I tried to really force myself into simplicity. The music is simple as are the single ball and single wand the the interaction of both of them. So far it has been going over very well. I find audiences can follow it easier and with the music and wand, it makes for a very poetic type piece. Thanks again.

Being a comedic performer all my life, Manipulation has never been of interest to me. I would guess the closest thing would be my handling of the Linking Rings and the "Half Dyed Silk"... anything else I perform with are multiplying bottles, chinese sticks and rope.

Kyle, the lollipop manipulation idea is really unique. Thanks for sharing.
Pete, linking rings, half dyed silk, and rope, I believe, is still considered as manipulation too, right? You still need skills to do those items. |

Kyle and everyone,
Can you point me to good learning sources for flip stick style moves? Thanks, Bill |

Flip's lecture notes from around 1974 "FLIPS TRIKS....", (I've recently seen this for sale in the lecture notes for sale section of this forum)and Tarbell Volume 7.
In developing a routine, try NOT to turn the whole thing into a 'baton twirling-like' super fast series of repeated vanishes and productions. it diminishes the magic and makes it all about moves.

For now I am doing 3 manipulation acts:
*Card Manipulation Act *Ball Manipulation Act *Parasol Act I think I also like them in that order, but more I get into the parasol act, more I love it. But my personal favourite is card manipulation, because for now its the most difficult. Soon you can see my practice sessions. -Fred |

Just keep in mind folks that as you are working on your manipulations, that you realize the moves are only tools. A great artist knows just what tools are needed to make a creative masterpeice. Not all tool and moves are needed. Learn also to not just show skill alone. Put in your manip acts something else that really is creative, unique and gives your audiences something more.

Thanks, Kyle, for the great input. I agree with it fully.
Thanks to Dynamike and Amado "Sonny" Narvaez for sharing the type of routines you are doing. I will be compiling a list of routines posted on this thread soon. That way we will be able to know what kind of routines are being done here. |

My all time favorites that I still perform and really look forward to performing are:
1. Multiplying Billiard Balls (without a shell) 2. Ball and Vase with Multiplying Balls (with a shell) 3. Cups and Balls, especially a Two Cup routine with a baseball for the final load that I have just worked up after studying Tommy Wonder's routine 4. My version of Alan Wakelings Fan Routine, set to "Dance the Night Away" by Van Halen 5. Aaron Fisher's Panic the crowd really enjoys this one 6. Linking Rings I would love to piece together a cups and ball routine that uses multiplying cups and balls. Start with two cups and two balls and end up with 8 or 9 cups and balls. I have an Enchanted Cube routine that I perform which I like, and ever since adding it to the show, I have often toyed with the idea of doing something with an Etch-a-Sketch.
Peace

I'm working on a lot of acts but they are all in "construction". I have an act of coins and about 2 "mixed" (Silks, Canes, Balls, and sometimes doves) And I would also like to start a Cards manipulation act.
