If you want simple stuff that looks good buy Marks Bad To The Balloon DVD's.. (they sell them at Penguin Magic too) I also reccomend Don Caldwells Mad Hats & Wild Wearables DVD's his stuff is way cool but will take some practice! |

Mark, I grew up doing one-balloon creations, so I guess I'm old-school. Since I'm a librarian and work library events, the balloons are given away free, tips are not allowed, and I'm paid the same rate as if I was based at a desk telling people where to find books on training puppies.

Hey Mike,
I can't comment on the speed that Captain Visual's material can be done. But I can tell you that with a bit of practice, many of Mark's pieces can be done in under three minutes. Just for the fun of it. I just timed myself, and I made Mark's shark hat in under a minute. It used two balloons. I am sure I can make some of his more complicated sculptures in under three minutes. Of course when I am actually working a paid gig, I don't try to work that fast, as I try to interact with the kids and adults. I do know of many professional balloon folks that use Mark's material in their professional careers. I understand that in your restaurant you only have three minutes to perform magic and make a balloon animal. I usually have a bit more time than three minutes. |

Then do balloons for every child at the table? then collect your tip and say goodbye? All this in 3 minutes without seeming like you wont respond or interact with the family at the table? I don't see this as possible.. I suggest you start doing the balloons on his videos since you have them already.. You will notice your speed will come quickly.. (BUT DOING BALLOON FOR ALL THE KIDS AT A TABLE AND MAGIC IN 3 MINUTES WONT HAPPEN WITH EVEN SINGLE STUFF.) You will start making things on those videos in 60 seconds which is probably the same time it is taking you to make the most simple basic common balloon flower (two balloons) or a simple little one balloon teddy bear (due to so many twists).. Some of the stuff on the video may take 3 minutes at first or more but that will come with doing them over and over.. Like anything in magic, balloons and entertainment... Do it over and over.. I try and limit each balloon creation to 3 minutes or less.. So if there is 3 children I will be on to the next table in 9 minutes.. Usally quicker as I cut the small talk down and when my time is being pressed I move to 3 balloon creations.. When there is one child.. Depending how I feel and how the entertainment is going I am usually onto this next table in 4 minutes... From the time I say hello.. To the time I am walk away.. unless they don't speak english then I am dones usually in 2 minutes or less (NO JOKE.. I cant interact as well) |

Thanks everyone for the compliments.
Timing.... Bad to the Balloon creations are designed to be done in 30 seconds to 3 minutes per creation. 3 minutes per table is very unrealistic number, especially with magic. I understand it what your trying to do, just don't agree with my 25 years experience. When doing line work I strive for 2 minutes per with schtick, however no choices. Put on my music loud and just create. Tableside with balloons and magic 9 minutes is my goal. That is 6 to 7 tables per hour or an average of 28 -50 people entertained. Point is your not going to get to every table... it is not possible. What you need to do is prioritize your tables. Kid tables come first, then I work from Styrofoam, Dessert, Steaks, salad, drinks and menu. Menu tables are ONLY if requested by the management or server in the weeds.

Hey Mike,
Let me see if I can describe this. Inflate a 260 almost all the way. Squeeze and stretch to soften. Form the balloon in an "S" shape, but make the top of the "S" longer than the bottom of the "S". Here comes the fun part twist the top of the "S" and one bend of the "S" (three balloon sections), then twist the bottom of the "S" and the other bend in the "S". If you did this correctly, you should get one long bubble which is the head and neck of the dino a loop twist which is the front feet, a three bubble section which is the body, another loop twist for the back feet and a shorter bubble which is the tail. Shape the head and neck and the tail. You have created a dinosaur with one balloon and two twists!! |

If you have only three minutes per table, and the reason is that there are SO many tables to cover, then that restaurant must be doing VERY well - maybe you should suggest them hiring a second magician to help cover all the tables? Three minutes is pretty absurd.
