Buy some good literature of some area of magic you are interested in. In most cases this will lead to spending money for the appropriate props (if there still is money left after buying some book, that is.).
Bobo e. g. is a good choice. This might lead to buying an okito box, chinese coins, gaff coins, ... For me it would be ropes and color changing knives. Love them. |

Hmm...
It is hard to suggest something without knowing what you already own. Assuming after 1,5 years of doing magic that you have all the usual props, my suggestion would still be to deepen your understanding of those areas of magic you feel attracted to. When you own all the props it is time to work with them seriously. This will lead to buy literature and/or DVDs to get some more ideas. My last buys were: - Enchanted cube (needed this one for the show) - Hopping halves - Chinese coins for some okito box routine Additionally I dabbled in levitation (MLS). Maybe this is some inspiration for you? Or could you provide more information to your situation? Cheers Olaf |

Ok well I just recently got into props because before I have just een doing things with everyday items...but I do have:
Scotch and Soda Free Will A deck of cards..hehe "Getting Sponge Balls" ( used to think they were lame but after I got more experienced I loved them) Invisible Thread etc. I don't have all of it on top of my head but prop wise that is what I have...forgot to say Sponge Bunnies...but those are most of them but I can put up a nice little routine from all the tricks you can do with those and from everyday objects... |

I always thought that rope magic would be some category I would rule out, because everything that can be thought of has been done already. Then I attended a lecture with Richard Sanders, him showing his Fiber Optics Extended. Bought the DVD and some rope right after the lecture.
Now this is my favourite routine (basing on FOE), along with some sponge ball routine. Never underestimate the impression you can do with FOE! If you not already have, then give it a try. Watch the teaser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOaAHzdihTc Hope that helps. |

Well, it probably depends on what kind of magic do you want to do once you have this magic. Are you wanting to perform stage magic, or table hopping? That might help determine what you want to pick up.
If you're wanting to put together some sort of routine, you might want a variety of magic types. It sounds like you already have coin and card, so sponge balls and rope would probably be a good choice to balance out the other fields. They can also play small or big, depending on the audience. Rope magic, like sponge balls, have much variety with a few small props. Good luck!

Thanks...
Also lacking in your "Routine" would be some sort of Mentalism magic. The basics of mentalism can be acquired pretty cheaply, though I haven't explored that myself. (I'm still a newbie, myself.)

I have two mentalism Sharebooks available at No Charge to serious performers, which means you commit to actually using an effect and giving me feedback. I have many other ShareBooks available as well, but it would be best if you explored some books on basics first, "Wilson's," "Abbott's Ropes" and "Bobo's Coins" can all be had for about $5.00 each used. PM me if necessary.
The key is to avoid spending a lot of money on some commercial trick just becasue it is popular. Mentalism may or may not be right for you -- same true of ropes or rings or cards. Find out for yourself by putting 'sweat equity' into this venture by praticing and performing live. "What" you perform is less important than "how" you do it, and what you learn from the experience.

Double O:
You still haven't really said what kind of magic you plan on doing. Also, who do you usually perform for, where, and how often? When I started out, I almost always did closeup for some pretty skeptical customers (my classmates at school). This meant my material had to be angle-proof, quickly reset, and props had to be examinable and durable (or easily replaced). What are your considerations? Your ambitions? What type of magic do you like to watch? If you're thinking of going pro someday, a book like Kirk Charles' "Standing Up Surrounded" could be VERY useful, teaching you performing strategies (pocket management, selection of material, dealing with "problem" audiences, etc) and business management. If not, I just gave you useless advice. Looks like you haven't covered cards and card sleights yet. "Card College" or the Daryl "Encyclopedia of Card Sleights" DVD could be excellent purchases that will serve you well in the long run. But maybe you hate cards, and should just ignore me. Good luck!

Thanks all you guys and I will for sure look at all of these reccomendations! And Ronin I am open for almost anything! Luckily I feel I am openminded to most fields of magic. I "usually perform for small amounts of people but not on stage. So I really like olaf´s idea of Fiber Optics.Nice idea Chronica! Yekrats, I absolutely love mentalism as well! But I have used suggestion, psychology for mind reading, and some other things to acheive small things but what would be the best book for mentalism because I have never gone "deep" into that field? And Funsway, I am thinking about what you said...what kind of feedback do you intend? Thanks guys!

I am glad to have been of help.
Fiber Optics can be shown close-up, parlour or stage. Works beautifully in every situation and packs small. You even do not need some scissors. Grab your ropes and optionally some ring and you are ready to go. There are not that many routines of this category. |

Once again thanks olaf because mind you guys...I just got out of small little cheap tricks that your Grandpa taught you at 7 years or on the internet maybe about a year or 8 months ago because I only tested tricks on my parents or my very close friends. So all these options to jump even deeper into this world is hope ful. THanks!

FOE is great. It's amazing how many routines you can do with a few pieces of rope.

Double O Magic,
if you are going for sponge balls I would suggest one good DVD and 4 sponge balls (Goshman, 2", super soft, red). Don't start with smaller ones if you have normal sized hands! If you can work with 2", smaller ones are a breeze. I started with this DVD: http://www.shop.zaubertricks.de/product_......DVD.html I am sure there are other DVDs which are as good as this one (until now I did not find any, but I know only a few ones). There are even 4 sponge balls and a purse frame included, but I never used the balls. Too small for my taste. The audience loves 2" balls. The purse frame on the other hand you WILL use. Hope that helps. |

Some additional things to consider:
Both sponge balls and FOE always get huge reactions from the audience. Both are comparable concerning the difficulty level, I would say. Maybe FOE needs a little more practicing, but perhaps that's just me. For certain sponge ball routines you will need a base (table, spectators hands, ...). You also need pockets of some kind to steal balls from. Sponges are not well suited for stage magic, although I saw routines on stage that went fine. Some routines may not work outdoors because of wind. FOE plays big for close-up, parlour and stage. No base needed. No pockets needed. Works outdoors and indoors. Props are easy to carry. In the end you will want to learn both, I guess. It is up to you with which one you want to start. |
