Curious Question.
Is this a classic routine that anyone can do, just by changing the props that comes out of the jacket? I thought this was a signature routine.

The funniest thing to pull out of the jacket?
A thread as long as this one.

I was think of Simon Lovell's routine, that he has been doing for many years.
I thought just changing the items would still be encroaching on his routine.

I really would like to know if this routine with different props and joke lines is open to be used because I always wanted to do it but felt the act was Simon Lovell's routine.

Simon's SJ routine is great. I think his was the first SJ I'd ever seen performed live too. At the Bristol Day of Magic. I think around 1997. I also saw Derren perform there too around the same time. Possibly a little later, maybe 1999(ish).
Anyway, I digress. I'm not too sure who's routine this was originally. I've seen quite a few magicians do it over the years. To be honest most, from memory, do have a Simon Lovell flavour to them. Whether he was the first to do it though I don't know. He could simply have been the first to do it successfully from a commercial point of view. If I were you I'd email Simon. I've asked him questions over the years and he's always been very friendly with his replies. If it is his routine he'll say I'm sure. And if he'd rather you not do it I'm sure he'll let you know that too. If you do get in touch with him and he has any info on the originator of this routine please do post here. I'd be interested to know too

Just for the record,
I've been doing my straitjacket routine for over thirty years and, along with Kerry Ross, was probably the first (or at least among the first few) to see the comedy potential of the prop. It would take a long time to explain my reasoning on why I think a serious straitjacket escape is no good for today's audiences and even longer to explain the theories behind each prop and line that make up the routine as it is now. So that's for another day! I've seen many of the bits in other people's later routines and I neither can or really care about doing anything about it. I do feel that folks would be better off going their own route though. Much harder to do than just lifting somebody else's stuff of course but, ultuimately, much more satisfying. Just my ten cents! All the very best to all, Simon |

Probably next to impossible to do but sounds funny. Pulling out another straight jacket.

We have been down this route before on here, to my knowledge Barry Walls was the first person to pull something from an SJ, in his case back in the war years it was stockings!!
Look back on here for more details. Ken. |

Just read Ken's post again. This can't be the same Barry Walls that Ken mentions, as he was only born in 1937 and according to the obit didn't start performing until he was 14 and that was Punch and Judy.
Ah well, thought I was on to a winner there.

With all of this discussion as to the Comedy Straitjacket origin, here it is - For the record...
While Olsen and Johnson actually did a comedy straitjacket bit in their 1930's show "Hellzapoppin", it was simply a running gag with the man never escaping. For my routine, it started in 1972 (before I was even a Magic Castle Junior)while I was in the Magic Explorer Post. After watching another member doing a dreadful (and quite serious) straitjacket escape, I decided to come up with a funny version. That's how it started. Most of the "Old Timers" at the Magic Castle still recognize me as the "father" of the modern-day comedy straightjacket escape. In 1977, Harry Anderson lifted the concept from me (documented) while we worked a week together at the Magic Castle. Within a few weeks, I received several calls that he was performing my routine back at the Club. In 1979, I was featured on the HBO special "The world's Greatest Escapes." It aired across the US, and then in the U.K. Within weeks, I started receiving calls about imitators - many stealing my routine line per line! Without my knowledge, Billy McComb had words with more than one of the guilty parties on my behalf. A wonderful Actor and Writer, Larry Hovis, spent a year re-writing my act so it wouldn't conflict with what others had stolen. Subsequently, those changes have been lifted by others as well. The field is now flooded with comedy straitjacket escapes to the point that, on one recent cruise, both the Juggler and Comic on board had performed versions before I arrived! While I still perform it as my flagship (at age 54), I guess that I unknowingly created a monster back in 1972! I appreciate those of you who have previously acknowledged my contribution to the world of Comedy and Magic. Thanks for allowing me to set the record straight (or is that strait?). |

But 1972 was long after Barry Walls performed his pulling stuff out of an sj, which (even though I never saw it myself... I'm 29) must have been hilarious. Especially since pulling stockings out would have been a direct dig at all the US soldiers that were stationed here during WW2.
Can anyone cast light on whether Barry's routine was a comedy piece? If it was then his would outdate any other's claim to being the originator of the comedy sj routine. Ros

Speaking with Barry it was developed by accident, seeing the GI`s showing off to the Brit girls in the pubs, flashing their money and nylons as a come on etc. This is where Barry got his idea from, that`s all I know for sure.
He used cod currency and pulled hundreds of pounds out of the SJ also knives, spoons and forks dropped out all over the floor during his presentation. Will not elaborate more on his routine as there will be proberly others who just happened to invent it first at the same time !! Ken. |
