I'm looking for a card stab/card on sword type effect.
Don't want to carry a big honkin' elastic-filled sword though. Something that could play large. Would really love if you could do one in each hand. Any thoughts? |

Card swords are so old fashioned. Try fly swatters. A fly buzzes around you as you perform, so you produce a fly swatter. You can't get it, so you produce a second fly swatter and this time you catch the fly between the two (maybe you could perform this one for the president). You get an idea and have two cards selected from a deck and shuffled back in. Then a spectator shoots the deck into the air and you smash the two fly swatters together and bring them apart to show one card on each swatter with a big squashed fly image imprinted on top of each card.

Hmmmm. nice idea, but doesn't carry the same threat of accidentally sticking someone. I'm thinking a blindfold and a little "careless" waving of the sword/knife should be amusing.

Steve Dacri does a nice routine on the Card Stab DVD. I think you can buy a copy for about 20 bucks or so from most dealers. Gives you lots of food for thought. Nice thing about most card stabs is that they can be done close up or adapted to play big on stage.

I have one that I put together over 20 years ago. Two helpers, each take card. You have them hold a large tray between them and you scatter all the cards onto the tray face down.
Bring out two pen knives, "Sing Sing and Alcatraz"... explain you will find the cards by stabbing them on the tray... but to make it more difficult "I will wear this blindfold." (Put it on) Take the knives back off the tray, spin around and stop aimed at one guy... etc. etc. you play this up per YOUR STYLE/PERSONLITY. Finally you stab and reveal the two cards. For the secret PM me.

Hehehehe See, there is no such thing as "old fashioned" props. It is only the routines that might be out of date. We do a KILLER card sword comedy routine that gets us a lot of attention and business. BTW, I'm not sharing it!
I will share this though, a fishing pole case works great for transporting a card sword. One of the things that Pat and I have been forced to do to keep our long term contracts and continue to be almost ridiculously busy performing is to mine the old books and sources for inspiration. We take routines that are overlooked by many of today's performers and breathe new life into them. The card sword, something I would not have considered doing 20 years ago, is now one of my favourite adult show routines. |
