I am wanting to perform the dancing handkerchief and would like to know the best way to approach it. Should I go with the John Calverts Casper? should I go with the Ultimate dancing hank? Where can I get information on making a john calverts dancing hank? Does the book New Animations cover this? Does anyone have information on procuring a john calverts casper? I don't want to necessarily break the bank by going with sean's trick.
Thanks in advance. |

Ok lets educate you first as to the differences
John calverts casper which was I believe peformed by Doug Henning first but that does not matter casper requiers an assitant as well as you really should be able to control your lighting. John sells a video for about $100 that teaches all the details as well as a live performance. its fun to watch. the gimmick will cost you less than $12 to make now Seans dancing hank can be done solo and lighting is not so much a problem unless you are using th e more elaborate version and even then lighiting is not that difficult but as with any thread effect you need to think about lighting. and with the new electronic programing they offer you can do a lot more with it. now that being said if you have an assitant and can control your stage and lighting casper is better hands down in my opinion. however I might concede to the fact that a layperson would not really notice the big differnece. but I still think casper is better by far. you can use a borrowed hanky and it can do a lot of imposible things and does not cost $2000. anyway just my thoughts again both are real good and both will require lots of practice to make it believeable on stage.

Doug Henning basically did the Ralph Adams method and routine.
John Calvert's requires two people for optium work as does the Blackstone method. Richard

Great Hug,
I have the Ralph Adams plans wich also includes three little baby hanks wich come to life. Strictly a stage effect, and as our friend Sam said light is a big factor, assistants ect. There is also a DW hank version which was used by DC on one of his specials and is used in conjunction to the stage version, DH did a muppet special wereby he used a table version with mini hanks. Now, however, there is an electronic one with no help but your own, I have not tested that one to express an opinion. |

Did John lecture on it, or just perform it?
When we had him, Tammy was working off behind the backdrop, he did not really reveal it. We had him for a big show as well, where he did it and the back stage crew were privvy to the entire workings and an encore.

Whenever I have worked with John (5 times) he used two assistants. It can be done with one but the movements are not as much. The something extra must be mounted to the wall or a stationary pole.

I had the opportunity to see John's lecture and really enjoyed meeting him. He only performs Casper and doesn't reveal it's method. Tammy is really talented and those two did a wonderful job performing Casper. John sold the secret in a DVD that you might be able to get your hands on. I have performed the Ralph Adams and Sean's dancing hank and for a one man show I will always go with Sean's. With the Ralph Adams you will need some talented assistants and lots of practice. Sean's PT system is very expensive but if you are a one man show and want to take this effect to the next level then it with might be worth looking at.

I owned the vhs tape of casper where john tipped the method. Casper only uses 1 assistant and something mounted to the wall. my 2 cents...

Hackler,
You are correct but as I said when I worked with him he used the second assistant instead of mounting to the wall. You still have to control the lights, background and staging with either version. Richard

On a smaller level, I have gotten some great results with Dushek's Waltzing mathilda (see June's Linking Ring parade), I have combined it with a transition to the Don Wayne Dancing hanky (though I no longer have one).
Both can animate and give you a one-man show.
