Everyone makes slip ups. I'm new enough to magic to have made my fair share for a lifetime. But I do want to talk about one that fluked out beautifully.
I can't remember what card routine I was doing, but I remember it involved a slight set up and a force. I did a lot of practicing card magic with my mother, but at this point, I knew NOTHING about controlling the audience. I remember asking her to place her card on top of one of the cut piles. She proceeded to do so, complete the cut and with a smug look on her face she picked up the cards and began to shuffle. (I know, some mother right!? Truly though, my fault). I had no outs planned, this was a first time performance, and the card was hopelessly lost. I made a comment about her lack of ability to follow instructions. I took the cards from her and decided was just going to end it with an ACR I had been practicing. She knew the trick was ruined, I believe that was her intentions. So I fanned the cards, had her select a new card. Well I'll be darned, it was the same card. Fully shuffled and purely a free choice, she re selected the old force card. I said NOTHING. I turned the deck over, ribbon spread them across the table to show all different cards, and I didn't answer her question of "How did you do that?" I simply smiled, and she just had a flurry of questions. "How did you know I would try and ruin the trick? How'd you know I was going to take the same card again?" It was then I learned a valuable lesson about hecklers. Nothing gives them greater pride than to voice that they know how a trick is accomplished. But on the other end of the spectrum, nothing frustrates them more than hearing the answer "It's magic" and having nothing else to go on. Now, if only all screw ups could fix themselves like that, we'd be set! Tim Howey |

I perform Tabary's FISM rope routine a lot, although it's the shorter version which he also did on World's Greatest Magic. Ok, so I do it A LOT - I do it when I have a rope with me, and it forms the middle of my parlor act. However, I'm still starting out, so you understand that I have had to date less than 15 parlor / stage performances, but got many repeat bookings from those so I don't completely suck, I guess.
Anyway, I'm doing a show for an event and I pull out the rope (it's bundled as per the method in the book). As I'm adjusting my grip, I say, "I have here a rope - " just then the *&%^$# short rope falls to the ground, messing up the whole trick immediately. But, unfazed, I continue my sentence smoothly as I bend over to pick up the short rope: "I have here a rope -and here a short rope." From there I went straight into Tabary's Fusion - The final part of what should have been a lengthy routine. Needless to say, the applause was thin at the end of that. Believe it or not I saved the show by twisting the Aces, a trick which is NOT part of my stage act (I was just trying to use up some of the extra time). It got applause which, as far as I was concerned at the time, was way out of proportion compared to some of the other effects I do.
