Although the gothic doesn't pervade all of my work, my ongoing theatre show certainly contains gothic elements. Take a look at the video and feel free to drop me a note with any questions.

These kids today with their Emo and Anne Rice.
Why, in my day the fans of Bauhaus and Joy Division called themselves "Death Rockers." The tag "Gothic Rock" was coined as an afterthought in an attempt to pigeonhole the music by one of it's own bands. Later, this label spread like a necrotic spider bite until the Death Rockers became Goths too. The scene was still kind of fun for about twelve more years. Then, sometime in the 90's a movie was released starring one half of Bradjolina and a crazy man who dances on couches. The next day there were little girls wearing black dresses and calling Korn a goth band. That was the day that death died. Oh, and something about dragging our coffins uphill both ways. At any rate, mine is more of a twisted carnival show type of thing. "Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen" is the closest to my 'vibe.' I try to avoid the overplayed European aristocrat approach.

Neil, I wish I was at least on the same continent as Chicago so I could make the trip to see your show. It looks great.
Critter, I wish I could pull off the European aristocrat pose but my Welsh accent doesn't suit I'm just re-reading Tony Shiels' Bizarre which I read a few years ago but wasn't in the right mood for at the time (my bad). Really enjoying it now. He has some effects based on the work of M. R. James and also mentions Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes which was a favourite of mine as a teenager. (I gave my younger brother a copy when he was 14 inscribed with "We are the October people. Happy Birthday." because our birthdays are both in October and its a reference to the story. It was only recently that he told me that it freaked him out a little at the time Speaking of Tony Shiels I used to go to see a band called The Sons of the Desert perform a lot when I lived in London. I recently found out that the mandolin player/singer is Tony Shiels' son... http://sonsofthedesert.free.fr/pages/album1-en.htm They were a great band. Ewan did an amazing version of Purple Haze on the mandolin as I vaguely recall from a gig in a dodgy pub in Elephant and Castle.

Hah! that band makes me smile. Thanks for posting that.
I love Doc Shiels, he is bizarre in the flesh. If you haven't heard the Magic CD of him, please go looking for it. It is a great example of Doc.

I do love the title of the published guide to Gothic homemaking..."Paint it Black."

Hm. When I was a kid, the Gothic crowd with whom I congregated knew nothing of razors-and-Vicodin-washed-down-with-Jack-Daniels death metal or punk; our Patron Saints were Poe and Dickinson; Charles Addams seemed like a swell sort, and didn't everyone long to live in a finely-crocketed tower with crumbling gargoyles chained at the cornice? Yes, that timeline died a campy death with Oscar Wilde, but I'd say rebellious (if passive aggressive) Boomer Resurrectionists gave it a good second life late mid-century.
This probably explained our lack of lunchtime invitation to sit at the 'cool' tables... |

Leland, I wouldn't want to sit at the "cool" tables, anyway.

As an old 'Goth' I find that it filters through into my work these days, both the 'sub-culture' and the other side of the goth coin, 'Litreature etc'. I do a bit of work for some of the local goth crowd and love it, but I wouldnt say its 'important' to my work.
Recently looked at doing a gig for some of the 'vampire' culture that's floating around - seems to be a larger sub-sub-set than I thought, but I can honestly say - Emo's give me the S..TS lol Oh, and Neo wasn't a goth...but he did make it hard to wear a trench coat for a few years (oooohhhh loook its a neo wanabee, grrrr) |
