Howdy fellow magis! I need some advice on which version of Twisting the Aces I should learn. You see, I'm trying to incorporate it into a routine that I'm creating. The previous effect is Spectator Cuts to the Aces, and so I'm trying to incorporate the four aces into the next effect. Now I know that there is more than one version of this...the one I'm looking the hardest at is the Asher Twist. But basically, I want to only use the four ungimmicked aces. Do any of you have any alternatives that I should maybe look into? Thanks for your suggestions!

The original version from Dai Vernon - use no more than four aces. Period.
Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.

You cant go wrong with the original, and the handling is not difficult.
After this you can show Dr. Daleys last trick John Bannon has in his great book DMF a routine with 4 or 5 tricks with the aces. This involve Spectator Cuts the Aces, Twisting the Aces, Dr. Daleys Last Trick and the Fabulous Jumping Aces. Check this. |

I agree with the comments regarding Vernon's original. I often start with an ace production, Twisting the Aces, then into Dr Daley's Last Trick and end with Blind Lemon Aces. It all flows together well.

I have not been around this worker section for some time and nice to hear some members here choose effective, worker stuff that I think the same way. Thanks nspikito & Freddie!

Wayne Houchin performs and explains "Twisting the Aces" on his new Art of Magic DVD. This is an ideal way for a beginner to learn the routine. He has a very nice presentation; however, I personally still prefer Vernon's original version.

Funny, I was actually already planning on doing Dr. Daley's Last Trick after twisting the aces as well! So I'll definitely check out the original version. Thanks! While we're at it, what do you think of the Asher Twist, as compared to Vernon's original twist? Is it more difficult? Why do you like the original better?

Lots of magicians perform the Asher Twist, but most of them don't perform it deceptively. (In fact, I've only seen a couple of magicians besides Lee Asher who can make the Asher Twist look deceptive.) Even when the Asher Twist is done well, it has angle issues. Vernon's original doesn't have this issue. For those reasons, I perform Vernon's Twisting the Aces with a few slight handling modifications and my own entertaining presentation. As always, your mileage may vary, etc.

I totally agree with Barry on the Asher Twist, nice but not as angle friendly and I've yet to see many do it as well as Lee!
Another thumbs up for Vernon's original TA which I have a couple extra phases before the Ace of Spades. I do Sanverted Aces as much if not more often than Dr Daley's Last Trick! Freddie, I just started Blind Lemon Ace's after meeting and hanging out with Jack and it's a blast to perform! I also like his "1,2,3,4" which both it and Blind Lemon is a good segue into Steve Dobson's Aces to Jacks! Ben Train's "Kosher Monte" aka "Monte Burn" is a sweet effect to get the Aces in play! MMc |

The version I prefer is called "French Twists" by Richard Vollmer. It has some nice progressive phases and a great ending. Here is a video of it if you are interested:

Another vote for the original Vernon's twisting the aces. There are quite a bit of people teaching the original method, but I would still suggest to read up the original write up in "More Inner Secrets of Card Magic" from the Inner Card Trilogy book

I, also love the original.
Especially for the reveal of the last Ace. My presentation: (IMHO, Always good to have the spec. (when possible) to be involved) First, I twist the packet, snap and show nothing happened. Informing the spec. that this Ace, sometimes, is very, very stubborn. Again, doing the same. Nothing. I hand the packet to the spec. and ask them to copy, what I've just done, & spread. The expression on his/her face is just: 'Priceless'. Warmest regards, Sixten |

I agree that Dai Vernon's is a great one -- I can't seem to get a presentation that is more than a watch this-- now this -- now this and finally this... it works well as is but I think there are lots of other possibilities out there -- I just can't nail it myself though.
I follow this up with Vernon's Variant... I forget where I read about this combo but they really play well together. A work in progress.

I really like Dai Vernon's the best.
No doubles (which are really hard for me to handle). Also, deceptive enough so even my now very aware family couldn't figure it out yet. |
