Love the writing!
Interesting the actually "worker" gave you the money to bet with not the old man Smile
And then waits for you to give him some Smile
I wonder how many "crews" he runs.
At 3,000 euro's per fine and 8 people in a crew no wonder the police are trying crack down on them.

I'm heading there tomorrow for a month now, staying just off Ramblas.
Haha! Totally gonna come back beaten up. Especially with 8 crew in on it.

Look forward to reading about Stockholm.

Ahh, Full Contact Monte… no holds barred ;o)

After reading your last blog I was going to say be careful and be alert. People can get a little nasty when you tamper with their livelihood.

Nicholas, be careful and great blogs by the way!

I will keep my eye on it man!

Hope the crotch gets better.

Hope you got some good pictures of it too.
Were you watching them or getting involved?

In Barcelona and already my new flatmates have been telling me the stories of the players - mentioning again the 3 carrots being used. I will venture out soon to see it, being here for a month I´m biding my time.

I was careful I'd just stay at home practicing my double lifts!

As spcarlson mentioned, you really are messing with people's livelihoods. Even if you just go an hang around and watch, they still don't like it.

Don't go near them unless your prepare to lose a little money, get abused and maybe, punched in the crotch!

"Interesting the actually "worker" gave you the money to bet with not the old man"

My dad was in Spain just little over a month ago and this is just what happened to him. He was walking on a street and saw this game, and before he knew it, someone was giving him money, "play, help me!".

After he told me that, I asked what he said back to them? His answer was great.

"I told to them that my son is a magician, I know how you do this shell game-thingy. My son shows me all his new tricks and I have seen this so many times."

Hustlers just took theyr bisnes elsewhere after that.

I had a worker hand me money to play with. I declined, so I'm not sure how it would have played out from there.

That same scenario has happened to so many people I know, they pause for a moment at the game and someone sticks a 20, 50 or 100 in their hand and says, “here play with my money”.

I wonder if anyone has ever said thanks and walked away with the money? If they did I’m sure they didn’t get far.

My understanding is if the game gets busted you can be arrested for just watching.

I wonder what happens next? Nobody I know has stuck around long enough to know how it plays out from there. Letting you lose and just taking it back doesn't sound like much of a "hook" to me. Do they take the money back if you win, saying it wasn't yours in the first place, goading you into using your own next time? Or, do they let you keep the money with the intention of continuing to play? In the latter case, I figure you don't actually *hold* the money after that, but they sort of play "banker" until you're really hooked and start adding some of your own to the pot.

Anybody know for sure?

Hi Dave -

The 'play with my money' gambit plays out like this...

The grifter holds out 20 euro. The mark goes to take the money and the grifter then asks HIM for 20 euro.

The law of reciprocity requires the mark to obey. By reaching for the money he has become an active participant in the game rather than an observer. And as a participant, if someone shows us trust, we must reciprocate.

It's the same technique used by Hari Krishnas to get donations after giving a 'free' gift. Read chapter two of Influence by Robert Cialdini. Also, read up on Oxytocin.

If the mark flat out refuses, he's not a mark, he's a spectator and he gets bumped.

The beauty of the gambit is that the grifter can qualify an entire crowd in a few seconds.

You can find this gambit fully explain on an upcoming DVD I'm working on

Great info and what an excellent photo Nicholas! There’s a picture that definitely paints a thousand words.

Let me take a moment to share an occurrence which happened to a magician friend of mine while visiting NYC in Chelsea. The Monte worker actually handed him a $100. bill and simply said “you can play if you want to” and continued on with his spiel. My magician friend turned to the lady next to him, probably a shill, handed it to her and said, “here you play.” My friend and his wife turned and went on their way.

The guts of the worker to freely hand out a large bill like that really struck me! Does he do this with everyone or just a select “chosen” few?

I’m sure there were a number of associates close by to prevent the bill from going to far.

I;m really suprised to hear that. I've never seen them let the mark ACTUALLY hold the money. I guess they must have back up.

The American monte and shell game crews are the toughest in the world. Africa is on the only place where it is tougher!

When will the DVD come out and what are the chances of getting the disks.

Thanks,

Steve
