La prestidigitation sans bagages ou mille tours dans une valise [Prestidigitation without luggage or one thousand tricks in a suitcase]. Its publication in leaflets started before WWII and was carried out until 1949 (I think). I had my original copy bound in three very thick volumes. An unbelievable work with many treasures which get forgotten and (sometimes) re-invented.
With Zum Pocco's Encyclopedia of Billiard Balls and Max Dif's history of magic (not the reduced versions), this is a work that English speaking magicians would love to be able to enjoy.
Magic is the art of emotionally sharing live impossible situations

The books of Wonder, while really excellent books, are not primarily collections of close-up magic.

Just to chime in, Jerry Mentzer's "Close-Up Cavalcade" series contains some very fine items. It's quite good because it gets away from the usual card work included in most close-up compendiums.

A highly subjective vote for Richard's Almanac because I am reading it again just now and enjoying the wonderful magic by Larry Jennings, Geoff Latta, Michael Skinner, Dai Vernon, Bob Stencil, Daryl, Michael Weber, ...

Lawrence, being a musician for the majority of my short life, about 15 years, I must say that the circumstances about which you met Rostropovich is absolutely amazing. truly one of the greatest cellists to ever grace the planet. Not to mention his existence brought about a revival of much more cello compositions. Great Story!
