It wasn't the brightest thing I've ever done in my life. Sadly though, it was far from the dumbest.

This condition is not exclusive to Germany. Here in the states, we tend to think the most expensive caskets will protect and preserve our loved ones. In actuality the more air tight the coffin, the more likely the cadaver will become what is known in the trade as morticians/ mortuary soap Cheaper caskets allow air and moisture to enter, and the process of decay to take place.

Sidney Smyth was a famous pathologist in the UK in the '40-and '50s; his memoires are a cracking read, called "Mostly Murder" - forensic pathology at the dawn of the art.
In the first chapter he tells of solving the murder of 2 children whose bodies were dumped in a marsh; the heads had undergone "adiposification" (adipose = fat) and preserved the features long after the killer would have supposed. Incidentally, sapnification can occur in the living - in pancreatitis a surgeon will often find a milky, soap-like fluid in the adominal cavity, due to pancreatic enzymes 'digesting' ones own fat. Finally, the only other soap/corpse refernce I know is Chuck Palaniuk's account of human sacrafice and cleaning properties of rivers, as described in "Fight Club" (right before Tyler gives his 'kiss' to Jack); not sure of the veracity, but great patter nonetheless. At least one such corpse's lack of decomposition was considered a miracle by some, who lobbied for her sainthood.
Right here in Chicago. Her story has opened my show, Supernatural Chicago, for the past five-plus years. Where have all of you been? Best, Neil

There's another film with the soap/fat idea: Romasanta. The story of a werewolf in Spain in the 1850's.

There's also the "Soap Lady" in the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia.
