So I just went to the Taste of Chicago to get a little fatter. I've been looking for places to busk but all the good spots don't allow it. But, when I was half a block from the entrance there was a balloonist, bucket drummers, guitarists, all taking in tips. I would have thought for sure they would have been ordered to leave by the police.
Does anyone know if there was an exception to the rules because of the fair? Or perhaps there are a lot more places to busk than I would have thought? |

I KNOW there is a lock down on being on site @ The Taste; I guess if you're outside the zone, you're ok...
I was under the impression that Chicago was getting more and more open to busking. Any WORKING buskers have any solid evidence of that?

I was just in chi speaking with the performing locals. they tell me chicago is a little tough to busk. I personally cannot say myself, I didn't have an oppertunity to play a show. this is just a couple of performers there said.
doesn't mean its not a warm place to perform! |

I happened to be out on Michigan Ave during Taste.
I don't try to work inside the festival anymore - it's not worth it. They assign you to a spot for two hours. The spots they assign are never very good, so I'd just as soon be outside the festival. On Friday, 7/3, I was working in front of the Art Institute for about 2 1/2 hrs, until the police cleared all the performers from the east side of Michigan Ave due to "heavy crowds." I didn't feel it was worth my time working the west side of the street, so I left. I got a call from a friend later in the afternoon, saying to come on down to work a bit further north from the festival on Michigan Ave, where I finished out the day on a pretty good note. There certainly is no exception to the rules during the Taste. The previous Sunday I was working on Michigan Ave, and the cops were standing right there, staring at their watches until 8 p.m., the time specified by law when buskers have to stop, even though the festival closed at 9. The cops were surprisingly well-briefed on the ordinance. |

In the summer it is.
Really, no two days are alike, and no two groups are alike. That's part of the fun and challenge of street performing. |
