What size silks do you prefer when doing Snap Silks?

That is a function of magician size! I am only 5'9" and two 24" silks diagonally are difficult for me to keep off the floor. (Yet as a "Dove Magician", I really need 24" silks or larger. So I often do it anyway.)
As the magicians' silk importer, I am convinced that the 18" size is the most popular. Just as a practical matter, the 12" size is almost too small due to the knots being the same size regardless of silk size. Too often, they show too soon also. An advantage of the 18" size is that it leads well into subsequent silk tricks using the same silks. Most usable silk stage props are at least 18" silks. Of course, diamond cut silks don't work well for Snap Silks. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Bob, you confirmed my thoughts. I am planning on using 24" silks for the dove work so I was hoping to use the same size for the Snap Silks. However, I realized it was going to be a rather long reach. I was hoping that at least a few magicians might confirm that they use 24" silks for Snap Silks. I guess if I hear enough negatives about 24" then I may decide to go with 18", but I'd really like to keep the silks the same size as the dove silks I'll be using.
Thanks, my friend! I hope to place an order with you as soon as I figure out what sizes and colors I need. Regan

Regan,
Use 24" silks by all means. Look at the clips on YouTube of PRO performer Johnny Hart and you'll see what I mean. When Marvyn Roy did Snap Silks (and he inspired a whole generation of stage professionals), he did the production fast and furious. (As does Johnny Hart) 24" or not, the silks weren't kept still long enough for gravity to take effect. Use the 24's and keep some momentum and pace and you'll be fine. I'm a full time PRO and never use anything smaller than a 24" in any effect unless forced to by some other requirement.

Thank you! Confirmation is a wonderful thing!
You mentioned that you use only 24" silks. I like to use 24" silks also. I use 18" in very few effects. I am thinking about making a silk fountain, and for it I guess I will need 18" silks, but most of my silks are 24".

60 cm silks are what I use for Marconick`s Silk shaker and Dream silks. I like it a bit more than snap silks since you always hold the same corner in your hand.

Bojanbarisic,
I remember that Marconick effect from many years ago, and it was / is a good one. Your point on the snap silks and the 'right' corner is well taken. I never cared for the obvious way of switching corners as it didn't make logical sense and always tried to cover the movement in subtle ways.

Well I guess I'm the odd ball. I use 18 inch silks and use 7 different colors.

Marconick also had a better way to join the silks than square knots.

To join the silks I use a little piece of a velcro sticky dot about 1/4 of the dot they hold good and pop apart easily as well.

I do not like to use velcro with silks as it can snag the fabric itself.

Richard you are quite corrrect. Never Velcro with silk. If that 'kind of thing' is required...better a very small dress snap. In the original Snap silks (diminishing silk production) it is important to 'upset the square nots during the rolling and prep phase so that they speedily come apart when needed during performance.

I like the square knot method, but because of set up convenience I will most likely use Duane Laflin's method.

You should check out Marconik's method of adjoining the silks.

I prefer the square knot method too. It works!
Velcro is not for real silk. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I make sure that the soft side of the velcro is bigger that the rough side so when they go together the rough side is completely covered and I have never had a problem with any snagging. I just use a small piece anyway. Of course once you attach velcro to the silk it is not useable for any other trick. You guy's have been at this a lot longer than I have but this is the way I was taught and it seems to work fine. However I will check out the other methods as well. It's just that the velcro method sets up so easily and quickly and really works well in performance.

I will be first to say if Velcro works for you, great. I never say do not use or it will not work. I am simply basing my posts on my experience.
I had a professor in college who said you could not process photo film (remember that stuff) a certain way. I took in some 11x14 prints I made and asked him what he thought. He said they were nice. I replied "Well, they were processed the way you said it could not be done." So I am always open to if something works for you great. Richard

I don't know if you still need answers for this topic but I personally use 18" silks (five for my needs) from Silk King Studios. As for the knots, I have found the normal knot explained in the "Caper's with Color" booklet is still the best to use and I find no reason for the the use of any other joining method. That of course is just my opinion... you can use whatever you feel comfortable with.
After I produce the silks I proceed into the Blendo described in Rice's Encyclopedia just in case you wanted to know.
